I don't know if I could do what I did with that recent Majora comic again for a good while. The feelings that were running through me needed to get out in comic form, but I could feel my body crumbling, begging for me to rest. Glad I did it, grammar error aside, but damn. Gotta fix my sleep.

This is Laika’s magnum opus. The story is simple, but gripping. The world feels alive and dangerous. The danger itself is real (people DIE in this). The animation is so good, I forgot it was stop motion at parts. Art in motion on screen.

I’m not kidding about the danger either. This movie starts with a child committing suicide. People get stabbed, shot, speared, arrowed, etc. This movie does not flinch. None of it tasteless. It only had me locked in hoping this girl can save her baby brother.

What’s funny is a lot of this story is very familiar. Labyrinth, Narnia, LOTR, etc. But it’s the way it tells these familiar story elements with the gorgeous stop motion, man. I wanted to scream “THESE ARE ALL PUPPETS IN FRONT OF A CAMERA” so many times.

For those new to Castlevania wanting a good starting point after Belmont’s Curse, this is genuinely the best starter package. You get a Classicvania and a Metroidvania. Both considered the best in their fields.
