AAAS recently joined hundreds of partners on Capitol Hill to advocate for sustained federal science investment. We proudly co-chair the Coalition for National Science Funding & sponsor the Rally for Medical Research. Scientific progress takes time & depends on stable, multiyear research funding.

The proposed OMB rule, now delayed until December, would give political appointees greater control over federal grants and allow funding to be denied or canceled if it conflicts with the administration’s agenda. AAAS CEO Sudip Parikh calls the plan a “brazen power grab.”

bit.lyAn O.M.B. Plan to Defund Science—and Anything Trump Doesn’t LikeUnder a new proposal, Administration officials could deny government grants to any group or project on the ground that it didn’t fit the President’s agenda.

Threats to funding basic research are at an all-time high. But despite often sounding obscure, basic research can have majorly beneficial outcomes. Research into lizard venom, for example, led to a breakthrough discovery that created one of the most widely used diabetes treatments in the world.

The OMB proposed rule puts federally funded research at risk – research that can often lead to major societal impacts. In one example, studies funded by the USDA allowed for the development of a novel method of eradicating screwworm flies, which has saved the livestock industry billions of dollars.

Oceans, climate, polar regions & outer space – these are Earth’s "Global Commons," natural systems that are shared by all nations. In a symposium hosted by AAAS and the French Embassy, experts came together to discuss the importance of international diplomacy to protect these crucial resources.

There's two CR drafts in play and a future debate on appropriations, and if any of that confuses you - we created a new course on @aaas.org's Learning Hub to help provide some of the context needed to keep up with the Federal R&D Budget Take it here: learninghub.aaas.org/courses/265745

If you have not already done so, submit a comment to OMB by July 13 and let your members of Congress know why it matters. Don't forget to fill out this AAAS questionnaire to let us know which actions you took and whether more resources and support would be helpful: airtable.com/appzQB6WzSLj...

OMB needs to hear from scientists, engineers, educators, students and others who can explain how the proposed rule on federal grantmaking would have devastating effects on their communities and the nation. Here's how to format an impactful comment & critical steps to take to make your voice heard ⤵️

“We are patriots not because America or American science are perfect, but because we share the founders’ aspirations for something even greater, and we have the agency to make it so. The story of America and American science is still being written and may it always be.” https://bit.ly/4f0MLuz

AAAS reviewed the U.S. Office of Management and Budget's recently released proposed rule and identified three themes that would impact the scientific enterprise: OMB overreach, political control over grantmaking, and expanded restrictions on international cooperation. Here are the key takeaways ⤵️
