There are many ways to destroy a university. Texas Tech, Texas A&M + the University of Texas have each taken a different approach…But the result will be the same: substandard education, substandard research + graduates who are less prepared for their future… + more prepared to obey without question.

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

AGGGH, I am going to have to write another comment. Accreditors should pay attention to the composition of boards because they have become political footballs that impact the education of students.

“Two courses for the fall of 2026 were canceled outright, while several more had to alter their syllabi to comply. Professors teaching those courses told The Chronicle they weren’t provided with any rationale for why their “exception requests” were partially or fully denied.”

This is a great film about young people who got together to protect freedom of reading. A local fight with implications for the state and nation. We can learn a lot from their organizing and advocacy. Because there is still much work to do.

Good article. The capacity to protect civil rights is just one reason why we need truly independent accreditation—and what makes the recent moves at SACS / “The Commission” so concerning.

This article does a great job laying out the threat posed by the attack on independent accreditation. It's really spot on that the authors draw parallels with older battles over desegregation. There's a reason we've been calling CPHE the Confederacy for Public Higher Ed www.wlrn.org/education/20...

We’re getting lost in branding. Everybody wants to be a Commission. The CPHE is the Commission for Public Higher Education, the thing out of Florida; The Commission on Colleges and Universities is the Artist previously known as SACSCOC. Both are apparently aiming at national “markets.”

If the Commission proposes to guarantee academic excellence, it should maintain its previous commitment to academic freedom and shared governance and rethink its intention to jettison principles and practices that have been central to American higher education for over half a century. 6/8

Heads up: this proposed rule from OPM affects not just the #sciences, but the National Endowment for the Humanities as well. These changes - to peer review, to staff expertise, to grant terminations - have been already happening for more than a year at our #humanities agency. #NEH

“The damage inflicted over the past 16 months is prologue. The OMB’s proposal for overhauling U.S. government grantmaking would explicitly subordinate expert peer review to political gatekeepers and make ideological alignment with the administration a prerequisite for funding.”
