Just came in a conversation: In Yiddish, the word for "Lunch," the meal, is literally just "Noon." (מיטאָג). Regardless if you eat it at 11 AM, or at 3 PM, obviously. Curious if any of you know other languages that do that?!

And of course tonight as well: CONGRATULATIONS SERBIA 🇷🇸 Such a powerful example of students taking to the street, protesting, organizing, AND WINNING - defeating a 12 year corrupt authoritarian incumbent 🎉 Čestitam Srbiji i čestitam studentima koji su izgleda pobedili na izborima! Bravo!

Ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity carried out, televised live - and most Western governments can't be bothered to even talk about it. This has always about erasing Palestinians in every way Israel can. Thousands of Palestinians forced out of their homes in Hebron, in the West Bank:

Via @mistaclim.bsky.social: "Tonight in Hebron and throughout the West Bank, residents—including women and children—were evacuated from their homes. This is not what a war to eradicate terror looks like. This is what terror looks like."

These were the stories all of us - with grandparents who are holocaust survivors - grew up with. Forced to leave homes, at times in the middle of the night, at gun point. Now people who are daring to pretend to speak in the name of Jews, are committing some of the same crimes.

I am not reading all that. Слава Україні 🇺🇦

Breaking News: Melania Trump said she brokered a “localized cease-fire” between Ukraine and Russia in Oleshky, a Ukrainian city. She said the cease-fire would allow residents of the frontline city to leave “through a designated safe passageway.”

A despicable ad from Vivek Ramaswamy who is a despicable person. Desperate Republicans have run some horrible, dishonest ads to distract from their failures in office, but maybe none worse than this one.

Actually, @speakermenin.bsky.social: suggesting that an attack on a BANK is an attack on Jews invokes one of the oldest and deadliest antisemitic points. How do you go from “bank vandalized” to “possible antisemitic hate crime” without invoking the dangerous antisemitic lie that Jews control banks?

You’ve seen the source sheets. You’ve heard the shiur. Now buy the book! "Sources of Pride: Jewish views on gender and sexuality anthologized from Biblical, Talmudic, Midrashic, Rabbinic, and Chassidic sources with contemporary and personal commentary" by Rabbi Abby Chava Stein

As usual, a classic @jvp.bsky.social 🤝 @jfrejnyc.bsky.social win!

An incredible victory. The result of years of organizing by so many groups & people, including @jvp.bsky.social. So much is possible in this new era for NYC that wasn't before, because of our movements, in the political conditions of NYC led by Mayor Mamdani. More! Keep going!

Today, one of our fellow New Yorkers was kidnapped by ICE outside a court room in Federal Plaza, in direct violation of the most recent federal ruling. Because a JFREJ court-watcher was on site, we could get the person's contact info to Mi Tlalli to provide commissary & support for the family.

Some of you who have been following the Isrealis for Peace Oct. 7th vigil, and the anti-Mamdani counter-protest there might appreciate this. It's from one of the attendees, claiming that a big group amongst the protesters had no idea they were gonna protest a vigil: Full text below.

"as someone who was there in the counter protesters side, I'd like to sincerely apologize, so many of us genuinely did not know that we were going to be doing this as we weren't told nor given input into planning. when we realized what was happening, many of us left." Continued ⬇️

"I'm so sorry for the hateful things that crowd shouted, please know that they do not represent me, us, and the rest of the pro-palestine movement 🫶 i myself and im sure many others would love to work with you all in the future and also apologize personally for the hurt that was caused 🫶🫶🫶"

As an undergrad, Columbia/Barnard Hillel was my Jewish home on campus, and integral to my Jewish journey beyond Orthodoxy. Watching it host a “move to Jerusalem” event WITH THE JERUSALEM MUNICIPALITY - as that same government demolishes Palestinian homes, is so deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

Prem Thakker ツ@premthakker.bsky.social

New: Jewish students announce a boycott Columbia/Barnard Hillel, as it hosts an Israeli group "encouraging Jewish students to move to settlements on land Israel seized from Palestinians." Says the group recently demolished homes, displacing Palestinian families & it intends to demolish dozens more.

This is happening at the same time as the government is actively destroying homes, and accelerating the ethnic cleansing of entire Palestinian neighborhoods in Jerusalem.

Israel minister and extreme right-wing lunatic, Ben-Gvir rejoices over the demolition of a residential building in East Jerusalem, that sees his own nations people, including total families, left homeless.

I truly don't get how anyone can twist Zohran attending the Oct. 7 vigil into something "new," or a shift in policy, for the Mayor --- He attended the exact same event, organized by the same group, under the same name (Israelis for Peace), with the same people, last year during the election.

The logical conclusion of Zionism: The 96-year-old leader of Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox non Hasidic) Jews is "anti-Semetic" - because he is anti-Zionist That's according to Naftali Bennet, former Israeli Prime Minister, current leader of the 2nd largest "opposition" party in the polls.

The Rabbi - the leader (to some extent) of roughly half a million Jews - has also said that he thinks religious Jews would be better off under an Arab run country, than they are under a Zionist one. bsky.app/profile/then...

The New Arab@thenewarab.bsky.social

One of Israel’s most influential ultra-Orthodox rabbis has said Jews could have lived well under Arab rule, arguing it would have been “the best situation”. Rabbi Dov Lando also blamed Zionism for fuelling Arab hostility towards Jews and bringing “physical disasters” upon the Jewish people.

I could never have dreamed that 35 years later, on the night before this birthday, I'd be standing in Grand Army Plaza, with an open Torah in front of me, surrounded by a vibrant mix of Brooklyn Jewish communities, experiencing the beauty and power of truly egalitarian, progressive, joyous Judaism.

Today I feel grateful, empowered, deeply in touch with the joy of our traditions and our Judaism --- and with the joy that comes with constantly renewing them. Building communities that are unapologetically progressive, deeply grounded in our traditions, >>>

Except, of course, I wasn't that boy. I knew that from a very young age. Birthdays carry a certain added intensity when you disagree with one of the lines on your original (now updated) birth certificate. I've had to rethink and redefine what it means to be born, >

> while redefining so much of myself. I wrote about that day in my book Becoming Eve, as seen above, and here. For a long time after leaving the Hasidic community, I didn't think Judaism had anything else to offer me.

- as she would remind me yearly - dropped my five older sisters at my grandparents in Williamsburg, and rushed to the hospital. I was three weeks early. By that night, after five girls, my father was celebrating - what he thought was - finally having his boy.

גוט יום טוב 💖 One final Kiddush (and special Havdalah) for Simchas Torah - a holiday uniquely created by and in the diaspora. Even more, if not for the special "Second Day" only celebrated in the Diaspora, Simchat Torah likely wouldn't have developed! Off to dance Hakofos - Chag Sameach 💃
