Happening now in Cape Town: African researchers are working with their own agricultural and genomic datasets at the APBA/ABI Agri-informatics Hackathon, using bioinformatics to turn complex data into useful insights for crop research and breeding. #Bioinformatics

A snapshot from the ABI stand at SASBi SAGS this week. Travel fellowship recipients, ABI researchers, and friends of the Institute stopping by, catching up between talks, meeting for the first time. This is what building African bioinformatics looks like in person.

Congratulations to Siphamandla Dlamini (UWC) and Bruhan Kyomuhendo (UP), two of the students ABI supported with travel fellowships to the SASBi SAGS Bio2026 Student Symposium. 1st and 3rd place. ABI is exhibiting at the SASBi SAGS conference today and tomorrow. Come find us at the stand.

The global genomics market is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030. Without the scientists and infrastructure to generate that value, Africa risks buying back knowledge derived from its own biology. Building African bioinformatics capacity is not just scientific. It is economic. And sovereign.

Three billion letters in every cell. Uniquely yours, yet shared with every human on earth. Reading them is DNA sequencing. Finding the mutations and variants that matter is bioinformatics. Africa, with the world's greatest genetic diversity, sits at the heart of it. #DNASequencing #Bioinformatics

The cradle of humankind. The origin of our species. Home to the deepest human genetic diversity on earth. And the most underrepresented continent in the global genomic databases driving scientific discovery. Closing that gap is the work of the African Bioinformatics Institute.

A human genome once took 13 years and $3 billion to sequence. Today it takes under 24 hours. But reading the code is only the beginning. Making sense of 3 billion letters of biological data is the work of bioinformatics. Swipe for a plain language explainer.

A highlight from the ABI Annual General Meeting. Founding member Prof. Nicky Mulder reflects on what ABI is building and why it matters, from the science to the community to the long-term vision for bioinformatics across Africa. #AfricanScience #Bioinformatics #ABI
