A little more news about a demented US president scrabbling around to steal a little more wealth. How pathetic to see someone too dim to be capable of recognizing the idea of “enough”. As it is, billionaires all make being disgustingly rich sound merely, well, disgusting.

things you won't hear much in the immigration debate: it's already fallen (see Sunder's thread) + OBR assumes net immigration 350,000ish for its forecasts so we should be discussing 'why the economy needs this many people, who should they be, & if you want fewer what does that do to growth'

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Net migration is currently about half the most recent headline number. It was net 730k for year to June 2024. (The year to the election). Since then immigration is down by 400k (in published visa data) Net migration depends on emigration, but on course to halve. There is a lag in reporting it

The Internet Archive backing up Web pages and digitising public domain material is great. Inventing their own digital lending library and rules, offering current, copyright work to anyone for free without writers' consent or payment like legitimate libraries is not. That's what landed them in court.

Apparently, Bill Gates's daughter has let slip that he has Asperger's Syndrome. Sorry, Bill. Did you think it wasn't blindingly obvious? And it's not as though it's anything to be ashamed of in any case.

If we in Europe are moving ourselves away from the US and all that goes with it, could we make reCAPTCHA high on the list of things that we will just have to do without?

Note to whoever writes those "I'm not a robot" tests. I'm British, so I don't know what a fire hydrant is. Nor am I familiar with a crosswalk. Time to get over the idea that you people still speak English. You speak American and it is NOT the same.

Message for those currently rampaging through the US administration: Any stupid dumbfuck can move fast and break things. It takes a team that is both hard-working and clever to make things in the first place.

It's my understanding the current administration was humiliated by its betters today, an observation that will be evergreen for the next three years, ten months

I have just been listening to BBC reporting of Israeli-Hamas negotiations. Everyone seems to possess endless amounts of shock, horror and fury. No one seems even to have heard of compassion, except a couple of hostage families. It’s no wonder there is zero chance of any kind of peaceful solution.

Why do we in Europe still tolerate American military bases on our territory? We wouldn't tolerate Russian military bases, and America is no more a friendly nation than Russia.

Zelenskyy and his staff are still drafting a response to the Trumpery “peace” proposals. The “off” is pretty firm now, but the other word is still up for grabs.
