So what do I take away from pondering this? Mainly that if politics is sports/entertainment, there's no point in trying to argue about facts. It's about stories -- can the coach recruit new talent, or tweak the lineup to break a losing streak? Can yesterdays hero morph into tomorrow's villain?

The most successful US right wing politicians of the last 50 years -- Reagan and Trump -- earned their name recognition as entertainers. It's for the Dems to lighten up on boring facts and policies, and double down on entertaining stories and engaging events. Maybe run Jon Stewart in 2028???

My mother, on the other hand, moved beyond her Eisenhower Republicanism sometime during the Reagan-Bush years. Her last words in 2006, to a hospice nurse asking "what's causing you pain right now?", were "George Bush". I'm grateful she doesn't have to endure the pain Trump would be causing her!

But although he was "trained, not educated" by his own self-assessment, he helps me understand the mindset that allowed an even more privileged Palm Beach golfer to rule: To my dad, politics was "entertainment" ... like sports, you pick a team to root for and then you're happen when they win...

... The Navy put him through an accelerated college / med school program from 1942 to 1948. So he not only didn't get shot at, he got set up for a lucrative career as a radiologist, courtesy of the taxpayers. ... but he spent his life as a Republican, opposing Medicare and "socialized medicine"....
