Me: Okay, self, please try to contain the historical factoids like a normal person— Me, not much later: So can you remember if the Singer sewing machine founder was chased out of the country for being a ho, or if he fled in disgrace?

(Answer: he was arrested for bigamy, let out on bond, fled to England, and then people found out he had a *third* wife and family) (and maybe a common-law fourth wife)

From "You're not mourning this hateful white supremacist enough!" to "Murder's funny again!" and back without a speck of self-awareness

Vance on Trump's strikes on boats: "I wouldn't go fishing right now in that area of the world."

One of the monarch caterpillars went on a grand adventure across the garden & porch before settling down under the railing. It's pretty wild to think of how in a week or two, they might be on their way to Mexico.

Nature is healing* *"healing" Look, y'all, that fwd about milkweed instantly killing lanternflies is nice to think about—but it's got no legs. Yellowjackets, however, have six legs, & now we know they'll make snacks out of these invasive buggers. Let's let the zesty little monsters work.

I have still managed to grow weirdly pretty garlic, even with the onion fly catastrophes of this spring. This year my garden savior was neem soaks; next year I'm adding a mesh tent + yellow sticky traps.

That awkward moment where I'm supposed to show prep & plan for the future, when the future's just been fucked over in ways we're not gonna fully understand for a long, long while.

This year's regular strawberries continue to struggle, due to birds/chipmunks/friendly fire (strawberries are allelopathic)—but the feral patch of f. virginiana persists, despite having been mowed over a few times.

In 1881, William Morris watched birds pillaging his strawberry patch—and in response, created the iconic Strawberry Thief textile/wallpaper print. I am not William Morris. I can't effectively make my strawberry thieves into a print—but if they keep it up, I might turn them into bird pie.

And yes, I've got red-painted rocks scattered through the beds. Last year it seemed to work on everything but the chipmunks; this year, robins are snagging & mangling everything strawberry-shaped, red or not.

Folks call your Senators now!! A ban on any state laws on GenAi for 10 YEARS is gonna do unthinkable harm! For those of you wondering what to say here are two posts you can use to build your own script (use alt script to cut and paste) Need to find your representatives? Here you go: 5calls.org

Good lord just what the hell is up today. A potential ban on any regulation for AI for the next 10 years? This includes good bills like AB 412 of legislation protecting folks from Deepfakes! Wtf?! Call your congressmen and women asap to tell them to take this down! www.404media.co/republicans-...

"I want to make new things" + "Wait, I planted something here?" + "Wtf did I plant here anyway??" = Flower stack on 16ga stainless, with a handy plant tag. It weebles, it wobbles, it doesn't blow away or wash off or crumble or turn to mush like the rest of this year's plant markers.

Brotip: If you get spammed by "Join our fuzzy animal team!" bots every time you post on IG, try reporting & blocking the page they're promoting too. Or, y'know, make some distance from the unrepentant shitty bot farm that is IG, since it's rapidly diving into non-functionality.

Things I learned from spending a few days without power, after the Tuesday 10-minute hurricane: • fuckin' No One was prepared. One other person in the neighborhood had a generator. People had no plan or idea of what to do, so once it became clear power wasn't coming back soon they panicked. /?

• We were lucky in that we still had water, gas, & access to gasoline. This could've been disastrous. Climate change isn't getting any better & the weather will follow suit, so getting those angles secured is probably going to be important. Soooo ... Today I research solar generators.

A friend said what we're all doing now would be what we'd do in an actual SHTF situation—which tracks: hunker down, pass the generator around, make sure the elderly neighbors are fed + not food poisoning themselves. Put your own oxygen mask on before helping the next person. Don't fuckin' panic.

• generators are expensive, stinky, & loud AF—but running one for 2 hours a day kept our + our neighbors' freezers frozen Remember, kids: If the fridge is out for 4+hours, pack your food in coolers with ice or pitch it. Your freezer will hold up for 24-48 hours—just don't open it. /?

Jesus Christ, Pittsburgh. If the street light is off—and a ton of them are off right now—you treat it like a stop sign. You don't just go blasting through it.

The bunnies have built an nest in my thyme plant, so cleaning up this section of the garden will wait until this little dude's not there to give me the hare-y eyeball.

Not me having to explain food allergies to an entire grown-ass Boomer "They didn't have all these peanut allergies when I was younger—" They did, you just didn't hear so much about them because kids were dying of 'em before they came of age. "People now are weak—" People now are surviving.

"It's JuSt A MiStAkE!" Sure, which is why everyone they're kidnapping is getting their full & constitutionally required due process and—ope. Yeah. About that.

Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

Cheap mulch and dirt aside, HD's got their retro pride merch marked down to 25¢ a brick—which is about as good as it gets outside of chasing (mismatched) fb marketplace freebies.

Don't get me wrong, free bricks are best bricks ... But when the bricks from the same manufacturer & demo'd building are FIVE different sizes, even a running bond path can be tricky*. *Read: jfc these dumb things are about to end up being a bunch of little decorative 2-level retaining walls.

Direct sowing peas (in early March, here in 6b) means you don't have to harden seedlings off—or worry about your cats eating them in the meantime. This year I soaked them overnight before planting. Maybe it'll make a difference?

15 days and the first ones had popped up; 19 days and there's a ton more little seedlings. Last year's pea plants turned into a battle with weeds, the deer, and the groundhogs. This year I'm already out of patience and starting off as Yarden Rambo.

The SCA baby brewer's journey: - Mead looks like it might be fun! - We made this! - But what if we also grew it? - This one is yarden-to-table and this is foraged fruit— - Also our cats are on the label, look how cute it is - Oops I've planted an orchard - bees? B E E S ?

"What do you mean, you aren't *allowed* to take pictures? What do you mean, your lightbox is full of hair? What do you mean, it's middle management's fault?" Behold: middle management. At least this one has some pretty strong feelings about everyone taking an appropriate amount of breaks.

Last year I sourced & planted a bunch of ramps (circa-Appalachian wild spring onions), in hopes that this year I wouldn't spend quite as much time hiking and climbing to find them. The good: they're coming up!

The still-kinda-good: I found a block of last year's ramps butter in the back of the freezer, & should probably use it before this year's batch is ready for harvest. Popping the lid means getting popped in the face with the scent of spring onion.

The best? Colcannon with ramps butter. (My ratios: About 3lbs potatoes/about 3 cups chopped cabbage/close to a stick worth of butter/a few green onions if you've got 'em, for extra oniony-ness/heavy cream until it's the right consistency/s&p)

Artist struggles: I like making travel memento shadowboxes. I plotted this one out, glued it all down last night ... Realized today that the hanging hook's on the bottom & it's all upside-down. I can add hooks & a wire so it's not a loss, but still had that moment where I 🤔😐🫠

Right now, the Internet would like to remind us (again) that the world is still on fire—which yes, it is, & it's gotdam exhausting But The hellebores I planted last year have Leeroy Jenkins'd themselves out of dirt that was frozen solid less than a week ago, & will probably start blooming soon.

I went to learn about tree grafting to better propagate some old heirloom apples—maaaybe via a little low-level crime—& some experienced grafters started talking about topping Bradford pears + grafting proper pear scions onto them as invasive control. Which This is an option? This is an option!

"Americans are unhealthy and have low life expectancies—" Yeah, lots of things get us that could be prevented or caught in their early stages with access to nationalized health care— "—so we're gonna take away your antidepressants and ADHD meds." 😐

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

Trump’s latest executive order (that was no doubt written by psychopath RFK Jr.) goes after antidepressants. As someone whose life was saved by them, you will pry my prozac from my cold dead hands. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

That unpleasant sensation of hanging out between "I didn't really *want* to pop up to pro-level backyard food production this year but here we are" & "Wonder how long it'll take before RFK & Co start trying to stuff people like me into 'work camps.'"

So basically, the Department of Health and Human Services is finished. If you want to stay safe from food recalls, viruses, and whatever else is coming—better start looking elsewhere for reliable information.
