Early in-person voting in Missouri starts tomorrow! Make your voting plan, check with your local election authority for polling places in your area.

Today, the ACLU of Missouri is in the state Supreme Court defending a lower court's ruling blocking the enforcement of a government censorship that led to hundreds of books being removed from school libraries across Missouri.

Yesterday, the ACLU of Missouri, the ACLU Voting Rights Project, and the Campaign Legal Center filed an amicus brief in Hoskins v. Von Glahn, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to reject a last-minute effort by the Missouri Secretary of State to reinstate an unlawful gerrymandered congressional map.

Since 2020, 27 states have banned transgender youth from playing school sports. Many of these bans allow for invasive forms of sex testing putting all female student-athletes at risk and emboldening intrusive challenges to student-athletes' sex.

This decision is a victory for families across the country and for every person who believes in the promises of our democracy. It proves unequivocally that the president does not decide who is protected by the constitution and its guarantee of birthright citizenship.

Missourians are free to once again access medication abortion in their home state. A recent ruling affirms the preliminary injunctions, allowing procedural abortion to continue, and making medication abortion available for the first time since 2018.

Two months after the Civil War officially ended, historians say Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to tell more than 250,000 enslaved people that they were free. We celebrate Juneteenth to commemorate the 1865 emancipation of enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas.

We fight for equality now & for those who come after us. This Pride Month and every month of the year, we’re celebrating our queer joy and fighting attacks on our rights.

While HB1663 targets trans people, it will harm all women and girls by enabling any school official to question & harass young women who participate in school sports. The law would invite gross scrutiny & harassment of all young women and girls and set a dangerous precedent for state overreach.

Our voices could be the difference in expanding rights or protecting Missourians from harmful bans. Democracy requires action, and our power is stronger together in community. Join us Wednesday, April 29 for our monthly People's Briefing. Link in comments.

BREAKING: We're joining over 120 organizations issuing a travel advisory to warn anyone visiting the U.S. for the 2026 FIFA World Cup of possible civil and human rights violations. FIFA must pressure the Trump administration to protect the people traveling to and working at the games.

Missouri voters approved both medical & recreational marijuana through the initiative petition process after politicians in Jefferson City failed to make changes. Now those same politicians want to take away our right to direct democracy by gutting the initiative petition process through Amendment 4

A4 is the politicians' attempt to consolidate power for themselves. A4 would require citizen-led ballot measures to pass in EVERY congressional district (<5% of voters could cause a measure to fail). However, politician-referred ballot measures would only need a simple majority statewide to pass.

The ACLU of Missouri, ArchCity Defenders, and MacArthur Justice Center issued the following statement: “These extended wait times are a direct result of DMH’s failure to follow the law. Worse, the situation is rapidly deteriorating.

"In just 3 years, the average wait time has doubled from an already illegal duration. In some instances, people are detained while waiting to receive treatment for a longer period of time than the maximum sentence for the crimes alleged. The court must intervene & order DMH to remedy this crisis.”

The lower court’s order departs from a century of legal precedent. Time and time again, courts upheld that “the mere lodging of a timely, legal, and sufficient referendum petition with the Secretary of State is all that” must be done to “halt” the “law affected”.

Previous Secretaries of State and Attorneys General have agreed that referred legislation is suspended upon receipt of the referendum petition. In 2017, then-Secretary Ashcroft announced that Missouri’s so-called right-to-work law was suspended after his office received more than 300,000 signatures.
