Pauli Murray was a visionary lawyer, activist, poet, and Episcopal priest who spent their life breaking boundaries and fighting for justice. Our history podcast, Let the Record Show, dives into their work to fight racism and sexism in jury selection during the civil rights era.

Our Executive Director michele storms said it best: Washington's Supreme Court is the last stop for justice in our state.   Abortion access, funding for schools, drug sentencing, and the death penalty. Washington’s Supreme Court has ruled on all of these issues and more.

This fall, five of the nine seats on the court are open, making it the largest election of the Washington Supreme Court in history.    There is a lot of money being spent to influence the race, but at the end of the day, you and other voters will decide who sits on the court.

I-001 forces school counselors and teachers to out LGBTQ+ students to abusive families, putting vulnerable kids at risk of harm or homelessness. Join Wokas and hundreds of other mental health experts, community groups, educators, doctors, and nurses by voting NO on I-001 by Nov 3rd. #NoHateWAState

2️⃣"For someone living in their vehicle, impoundment is not simply the loss of transportation; it is the loss of their home, shelter, possessions, and often their primary source of stability."

3️⃣"People experiencing homelessness should not lose the limited shelter and stability they have simply because adequate alternatives do not exist.” — Jazmyn Clark, ACLU-WA Smart Justice Policy Program Director

⚠️While the Council included funding to expand outreach and resources for people experiencing homelessness, we have serious concerns about implementation. Jazmyn Clark, our Smart Justice Policy Program Director, explains⤵️

1️⃣"Significant portions of the proposal rely on punitive enforcement and impoundment practices that raise constitutional and civil liberties concerns, as well as risk further destabilizing people living in vehicles."

The legislation now heads to Mayor Katie Wilson for approval. If passed, people with RVs parked on city streets for extended periods of time would have to join a permit program through the city.

People can only join that program if they were counted in a one-time city census and can prove they own their RV. The new rules would also eventually lead to an outright ban on RVs parked for more than two hours or overnight in public areas.

But now, there's an initiative on our ballots (I-645) that would repeal the Millionaires Tax. The repeal would:  ✴️Increase classroom sizes ✴️Increase healthcare costs for working families ✴️Lead to more expensive childcare ✴️Eliminate free school meals for many K-12 students

ICYMI: Earlier this year, Washington passed a law to make millionaires pay what they owe (aka the Millionaires Tax) to fund K-12 schools, healthcare and childcare.  It takes some of the burden of funding these essential services off of the shoulders of working families and marginalized communities.

Last year, 200 law enforcement officers descended on a majority-Latine family event in rural Idaho, throwing flashbang grenades, brandishing guns, and violently detaining families. Along with the ACLU of Idaho, Cooley LLP, and Stoel Rives LLP, we filed a lawsuit to hold the government accountable.

One year ago today, hundreds of Idaho families were terrorized at a family event in Wilder, Idaho. Children were zip-tied. U.S. citizens were detained. We refuse to let what happened in Wilder become the norm.

When your child has a bully at school or is dealing with anxiety, they need trusted adults and mental health resources they can turn to that help them make sense of their world. I-001 risks taking those trusted resources away and sharing students’ private health information without their consent.

It also puts LGBTQ+ students at risk of disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity before they're ready — a particularly dangerous situation if they don't have a supportive home. Vote NO on I-001.

Be an early voter, be an informed voter. 🤓 While the ACLU of Washington is a non-partisan organization that does not endorse candidates, we do take a position on ballot measures that impact civil liberties – and we support an informed and active electorate. ➡️ Swipe through for our election guide.

Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that President Trump can't ban reporters from CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from the White House while the case proceeds. The government can't punish journalists because it doesn't like their reporting. This is a win for our First Amendment rights.

We all want what's best for young people, but the sad truth is not all students have a supportive adult they can turn to and talk about their sexuality, gender identity, or mental health without fear.    Vote NO on I-001 when your ballot arrives.

Allowing schools to disclose private health information without student consent would severely impact a student’s stability at home, at a time when they need support. This violation of privacy can undermine the relationships that students may have with counselors and other trusted adults in schools.
