🎉🚧 Happy National Chemistry Week! 🧪🏗️ This year, we're celebrating the critical role chemistry plays in the strength, safety, and durability of the structures we use every day, Discover theme resources and learn more about how you can celebrate: buff.ly/4MTIEHR #ACS_NCW #NationalChemistryWeek

Juan Amador believes culture and traditions have a place in science. He wants Chicano/Hispanic and Native American scientists to know that SACNAS is a place where they can bring their entire authentic selves. [1/3]

At the conference, they can celebrate their heritage, feel empowered, and find mentorship opportunities. For Amador, honoring their founders, elders, and culture is at the core of SACNAS. It helps create a strong sense of community and a place where everyone feels like they belong in science. [2/3]

There is still time to propose a symposium for the 2027 Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference. Share your vision, highlight emerging research, and convene the scientific community around the innovations driving a more sustainable future. Submit yours today: buff.ly/PaQT61m

Sarah EchoHawk believes everyone should feel a sense of belonging in science. Through AISES, Indigenous students can find community by seeing themselves represented in the field. [1/3]

Seeing Indigenous people in science can be transformative. It connects the past, present, & future, inspiring generations to come. For her, supporting students helps them become scientists and problem solvers who create innovative science solutions. Here's how she does it. [2/3]

This was the final experimental proof of a theoretical model from 1953 outlining the requirements for the chemical “evolution” of homochirality: an asymmetric reaction that’s self-catalyzing and shows mutual inhibition between the two possible chiral products. [6/7]

Kensō Soai reported a reaction in 1990 that was both autocatalytic & enantioselective — two things that had been done before but never together. 5 years later, Soai & colleagues reported an asymmetric autocatalytic reaction in which the product had a higher enantiomeric excess than the catalyst. 5/7

To do this, they studied how the pigments absorb, store, & emit light, and how the processes change as the materials age. These glowing colors are not only beautiful in art & fashion; but they could also make a difference in safety applications, such as luminescent paint for airplane runways. [3/4]

In research presented at ACS Fall 2026, scientists at the College of Wooster are researching ways to preserve the striking optical effects that these luminary pigments provide so they can have an everlasting glow. [2/4]
