Flávio Bolsonaro refuses to concede Brazil's presidential election and will ask for the result to be annulled: "It is impossible to recognise the election results... We are going to ask for the annulment of these elections!"

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

To understand how Lula supporters are feeling right now, imagine Trump went to jail for his Jan 6 insurrection and then Biden/Harris defeated Don Jr in 2024.

So how did Lula come from behind to defeat Bolsonaro? In short, turnout. Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. But Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in the first round & won eliminated candidates' votes. A remarkable mobilisation. Second round turnout is usually below first.

Side note, but it's pretty cool to know the winner of a presidential election with over 125 million votes by midnight — in a country that's three hours behind you. God bless electronic voting machines.

With almost 76% of votes counted, Lula's lead over Bolsonaro is only growing. Polymarket now lists Lula's chances of victory at 98%. It's over. Lula defeats Bolsonaro.

Meanwhile, pro-democracy, pro-Europe protesters in Tbilisi, Georgia, are tonight nearing their 700th consecutive day of protest against the pro-Russian government. They haven't missed a single day in the last 23 months.

Hungarian PM Péter Magyar: "I have just spoken by phone with the leaders of the Students List, who won the elections in Serbia, to congratulate them... I assured them of Hungary’s support. I was delighted to hear how much strength our victory in April had given them during this difficult struggle."

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

The Student List had no party machinery. It operated through university assemblies, protests and hiking between cities & towns. They had 2% of national TV political advertising airtime vs 93% for Vučić. This is one of the most remarkable grassroots democratic victories in modern European history.

Polls just closed in the Brazilian presidential run off. Things are looking messy. Bolsonaro-affiliated mayors sabotaged public transport in at least ten states. São Paulo reportedly has 29% of buses out of service. The Brazilian Supreme Court has just ordered voting hours extended by 2 hours.

Many domestic flights to Lula’s northeast heartlands have reportedly also been cancelled. The scale of disruption indicates strong coordination. Serious voting irregularities could expose a Bonsonaro victory to legal action. Brazil's Superior Electoral Court could annul the result & order a rerun.

I would genuinely be totally fine for men to be disenfranchised. The outcome of only women being allowed to vote would be an astronomically better world to the extent that it would totally outweigh the democratic outrage.

President Lula after Flavio Bolsonaro mocked his missing finger: “I will not allow a militiaman to call me ‘nine fingers’. He has never worked a day in his life. He doesn't know what an employment book is.” Lula’s little finger was amputated after an industrial accident as a metalworker in 1964.

Mark Carney on Elon Musk crippling Ukraine’s Starlink: “I search for the right adjective to describe whoever took this decision… against a country that is literally fighting for the lives of its citizens against naked aggression."

A reminder that Russia’s economy is roughly the size of Texas’s. The United States spent trillions confronting Soviet imperialism during the Cold War. Russia lost. Decisively. There is no reason whatsoever for the US govt to fawn over Putin and treat Russia as though it were America’s equal.

'Giving Putin the respect and status he thinks he deserves' is just a shit negotiation strategy. It hugely exaggerates Russia's global power and position in the war. You would only take that approach if you want Putin & Russia to have an artificially better outcome than the war's reality warrants.

Elon Musk sabotaged Western defensive military operations against Putin's Russia. He committed an act of outright treachery. He is a malign force working against the West, and cannot be allowed to wield such vast wealth, power and influence any longer.

‘Traitor’ it not a term that should be thrown around lightly. It must be reserved only for those who egregiously and deliberately act to undermine the fundamental welfare of their own country or its true allies. But in Elon Musk’s case, it’s absolutely appropriate and accurate. Traitor.

The thing about white Christian nationalists is that they don't actually care about white Christians. They only care about themselves. You just have to see the heartbreaking images of dead Ukrainian children from the past few days to know that.

No other building stands a chance at the annual Ballroom & Military Complex Combination Awards.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "It's going to be the greatest ballroom and military complex combination ever built!" (Has any ballroom/military complex EVER been built?!)

Romanian Foreign Ministry tonight: "The Black Sea will be safe again. Two F-16 from the Romanian Air Force shot down two aerial drones that entered our airspace without authorization over the Black Sea. Our military has prepared for an increased intensity of hybrid interference."

This is admittedly just a hunch. But I strongly suspect that part of the motivation behind Trump and Musk crippling Ukrainian defence is the sheer childlike thrill of flicking a switch and watching things explode thousands of miles away. They are juvenile sadists literally playing with human lives.

In a few years, I'll refer to White House tenures in Scaramuccis rather than Zacharias, and some 23-year-old journo will ask me what it was like covering the Lincoln assassination.

The European Union should respond to the Trump administration's request to unfreeze Russian assets by seizing the entire €238 billion and using it to fund Ukraine's defence against Russia.

This is not a joke. The EU needs to rapidly revisit the issue of seizing frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's defence. We're six months away from France's presidential election. Both frontrunners will end financial and defence aid to Ukraine, which would be a catastrophe. We need to act now.

Do you feel betrayed? Zelensky: "Really, yes... It's a pity we are losing a strong partner." You think you're losing America? Zelensky" Yeah... It's not about business for us. It's just our life. And this our country, our body, our home, our children... This is not the right side of history."

Andy Burnham hugs Volodymyr Zelenskyy and welcomes him to Downing Street with a ceremonial guard of honour. This is how you treat the leader of the free world.

NATO Sec Gen Mark Rutte: "We will defend every inch of our territory... We have land forces all along the eastern flank of NATO... What we will exactly do if the Russians are stupid enough to attack... you will see then. I will not go into depth. But you can be assured we will defend ourselves."
