The ID Division at UM is growing! Opening up a search for two Clinical Track positions in the Division of Infectious Diseases (open rank). This is a supportive and collegial environment and a community dedicated to excellence in clinical care, education, and research. And Ann Arbor is awesome.

I just got my advance copy today. Can't wait to read it. Especially the parts of about viral mutabillity and the problem of the poliovirus endgame.

The @newyorker.com has a wonderful review of my new book, Beyond Inheritance: "Khamsi’s emphasis on the beneficial aspects of somatic mutations is one of the most striking elements of her book.” Intrigued? Order a copy of the book (or audiobook) here: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/711682...

I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

A bizarre dogma has emerged among the anti-mRNA crowd that the only data we have on vaccines is from the original trial papers, rather than the HUGE volume of studies that came out subsequently...

... then an avalanche showing effectiveness vs hospitalisation, vs critical care, vs death, for subgroups, different variants, different vaccines, over time. These are UK only - knock yourself out. That first study was just designed to check it worked safely vs cases. www.gov.uk/guidance/mon...

The federal government has decided to severely limit access to vaccines that have been shown to reduce illness, hospitalization, and death. Whereas we used to argue about whether government was forcing you to be vaccinated, now we government saying you can’t get vaccinated.

one small consolation of being a 60+ year old investigator is the ability to submit to 𝘔𝘈𝘛𝘜𝘙𝘌 family journals — sure they’re low impact (for our knees) but they have an early bird special if you submit between 4:00 and 5:30 on weekdays

Novel oral polio vaccines, now in type 1 and type 3 “flavors”!

I share this in case you're very literal like me and wonder why people keep insisting it's because coronaviruses look like they have a crown, when they don't.

Not to mention what it would do to society journals.

NIH is considering changes in supporting publication costs--some ideas are quite radical and would endanger our ability to publish at all. I don't love the cots from the big for-profits but it does cost$ to run a journal. Please repost. Comment at: osp.od.nih.gov/comment-form....

My biggest, loudest job application advice: WHY do you want this job? This SPECIFIC job? What about it interests you? What do you think of it? What can you bring to it? I know this sounds obvious but a generic cover letter isn't doing you favours - really. *Show me you know the job!* 1/7

Thanks to the ACIP and its evidence based recommendations, the biggest barrier to getting my shingles vax today was admitting to myself that I am over 50 and overdue. Walked right in to pharmacy, no doctor note or Rx, insurance paid. Who knows what this will be like in the future! #IDsky #medsky
