Glencore: don't mine Argentina's glaciers -- protect them now. action.eko.org/a/glencore-d...
This is shocking! Like (I assume) many other researchers in both #archaeology & #ornithology - I rely on access to "low-use" books for my work. And as a former resident of NH & frequenter of the UNH campus, with friends there, I'm devastated to see this happening. Niche work requires niche texts.🏺🪶
I asked UNH's archivist to create a file of letters protesting the "weeding" of 30% of the library's books. Future researchers need to know faculty did not let the books "go gentle into that good night" (30+ books on Dylan Thomas to be culled). 🗃️ #skystorians www.unionleader.com/opinion/op-e...
It's pretty pathetic that Susan Collins is only now working to affect Canadian tariffs, a few days before the mid-terms. Where was she for Roe v Wade and most everything else that has happened on her watch? And what's she got against Canadian canoes anyway? 🛶🛶🛶

Excited to share our study of the latitudinal diversity gradient and how it may be modified by humans. Working with millions of bird observations across ~500 cities, we found that cities significantly flattened the diversity gradient for native birds in winter. 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Climate change is set to reduce our Puffins 90% by 2050. Conservation measures will do very little - if anything - stop this. Climate change is outpacing conservation.
Puffin numbers in Britain and Ireland could decline dramatically by 2050 as a result of climate change, the BTO has warned, as a new book explores the life and uncertain future of one of the country's most familiar seabirds:
"Sitting beneath the squat roof of an aesthetically pathetic 20th century structure in Berkley, Massachusetts, Dighton Rock is—in terms of being a runestone—complete and total bullshit. But that’s not its fault. It never claimed to be a runestone itself." #Vikings
Vikings didn’t carve Dighton Rock, but lots of people said they did anyway. Check out the new post for more about all that including a variety of images of both the rock itself as well as an actual legitimate runestone replica in Massachusetts. scandinavianaggression.com/2026/10/the-...

About to be gutted by Congress unless enough people take action and change their minds.
Happy 60th to the National Historic Preservation Act, signed into law by President Johnson on October 15, 1966. This established the National Register of Historic Places, and the network of 59 State Historic Preservation Offices, later expanded to also include Tribal Historic Preservation Offices.

Georgia's Tybee Island saw a record 59 loggerhead sea turtle nests this year, part of a broader rebound for the species in the Southeast. The state recorded 4,174 nests, the most since 1989. According to biologists, conservation efforts are paying off.
