To prove my gamer cred, some thoughts on the new tft set, specifically wisps. I think the wisp system as it is just doesn't really work, but I don't really blame the designers because I'm not sure wisps can really work effectively?

Its a difficult design problem where if wisps are too weak then they may as well not be there and if they're too strong then the whole game becomes about them. I don't envy the designers.

The issue with wisps is you can't really make them strong in the way that power ups could be, on account of how they work. Wisps are either a temporary effect that lasts one round or some resources. If they're too strong it makes the game really swingy in a way that I think would be bad.

I don't think it would be healthy for the game if you could get crushed by another comp one round and then destroy them the next purely through the luck of which wisps you and your opponents happened to pull. It introduces too much randomness to the game.

But for me, in order for that added complexity to feel worthwhile, the wisps need to feel genuinely impactful, and most of them just don't. The strongest wisps are the ones that give you resources, like gold or reforgers, and to me that's not a terribly interesting power source.

I'd compare wisps to the power snax from coliseum which I think we're successful! The power ups felt impactful and like you could build a whole game around them. They enabled you to work towards a specific power fantasy, and you could reasonably search for specific power ups if you wanted to.

Being good™️ at tft is for the most part about holding a big combinatorics of different effects in your head. All the champions, all the different traits, all the augments, and how all those things interact and when they're good or when they're weak.

Wisps asks you to add an extra system to that, and a somewhat complicated one as you get offered new wisps basically every round. That adds a lot of additional thought to your decision making on a round by round basis, which in a vacuum could be fine. Complexity is value neutral.

The #Maywolf '26 Collab image is now done! Thank you to everyone who participated, all the wolves are looking amazing! You can take a close-up look at the art + see credits at the accompanying video (I styled it after windows movie maker lol): youtu.be/xW8Pr0bOtN8 #furry #maywolf2026 #artcollab

Honestly love how divided people are on Pyrena. The fact that it's really hitting for some people and not working at all for others is exactly where I want the stuff I make to be!
