I've been running a software side business since 2011. Springbeats sells MIDI tools to musicians. Small sales, but every month. Less a gold mine than a well-behaved tap (it drips, and has never stopped). Here I share my failures and what actually pays, from Elixir SaaS to MIDI plugins.

My side-project week, honestly: Writing code: 0 hours Deciding what NOT to build: 1 hour Patching and hardening my servers after the latest open-source CVEs: 2 hours The server used to be a bit smug about its uptime… Shipping is optional. Updates aren't.

Spent years getting the family elders comfortable with WhatsApp. Now we're migrating to Signal. Pretty sure this is what Sisyphus felt like, except the boulder sends encrypted messages.

Software engineering feels like being a pilot now. The autopilot does all the flying and you're mainly there to look responsible when things go sideways. Which they will. At 3am.

Any e-commerce site in 2026 that makes you pay for returns and hands you store credit instead of a real refund deserves to disappear. I thought we settled this.

Super intéressant 👍

Now I get where our reputation comes from. I watched an old Claude Sautet film and all I saw was cigarettes, drinks, cigars, wine, more smokes, beer, wine.

Migrating from 1Password to Proton Pass is really easy. The only problem I found so far is that the Proton Pass ssh-agent doesn't find the imported ssh keys in my Vault 😐

The speed of iteration that AI procures is just the best feeling for front-end work. For backend... I still want to know everything by heart for when shit hits the fan...

Just got an email that the Neato robot vacuum app is shutting down. No more no-go zones or coverage checks. This is exactly why we need more free and open-source tech in our lives.

Another outstanding open-source project, this time to audit how you spend your time during the day: Dayflow takes a screenshot every second and uses a local LLM to analyze your activities, creating a detailed timeline of your day. github.com/JerryZLiu/D...

If Teams uses the same emojis as Slack and Apple but with a different design, does that mean an intern at Microsoft had to review all of them and suggest a cartoony style? Did they hold meetings to approve the design for each emoji? I'm curious about the process.

My Apple Pencil 2 gradually stopped working. Changing the tip and trying all other suggested fixes didn't help. So, I sprayed contact cleaner under the tip, and it instantly came back to life. It's like voodoo magic!

Spent far too long on an issue where I couldn't open a remote BEAM shell on my server without the container restarting. It turned out to be just an out-of-memory issue. LLMs were completely unhelpful. What a waste of time and tokens! #myelixirstatus

Stitch experimental mode (powered by Gemini) isn't much better at designing than what Claude 4 gave me... Maybe it's my prompt engineering skills, but any noob should be able to get a proper design.
