Fantastic talk from Elizabeth Bacon at #pybeach about improving computer science education in teaching - the LA school system is incredibly lucky to have her!

A delightful rarity that leaving DEN was really smooth and then arriving into LAX is the bumpy bit, with some actual rainclouds.

Finally moving across to Jellyfin after Plex apparently laid off the entire player team this week, and it has been mostly seamless. Plus, β€œFinamp” as a music player name makes me smile every time.

Popped β€œphp” into my history viewer on the browser just to see what is obviously PHP, and among several forums, also includes, one of my VPS hosters and Tampermonkey (fortunately I already disabled user script auto update)

Desperately trying to think if I have any PHP running anywhere (including inside random Docker containers for things I run…)

People here like to rag on the bike infrastructure in Denver, but I just cycled 14 miles from my house to downtown entirely on paved, separated bike trails. They even closed part of a road to properly divert the trail around a new bit they are building!

Plus it’s only $2.75 to catch the train back to my nearby station afterwards. And there’s a great burger place next to Union Station downtown! Making the most of the unexpectedly warm autumn over here…

I do love the politeness of the flight attendants asking β€œWould you like to take the upgrade?”. No, actually, I would rather not sit in the big comfy seat on the incredibly rare occasion an upgrade actually happens between SFO and DEN…

(I also assume some big industry event is happening in SF as a lot of very tired looking business people wearing branded gear are on this flight)

My financial advisor told me it was time to get estate planning/a will done. He’s not wrong, but also every single estate lawyer’s website is basically β€œDEFEND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT” and, ugh.

A few revisions into my California model and it's looking quite sharp. The firefighters to came to do the annual inspection today were quite interested in it!

Had an idea of how to store my bike more efficiently in the garage, bought one item, and somehow it all worked great first try. A delightful rarity.

Went to see how to turn off Apple Intelligence on the new MacOS version and... it's already turned off because it can't handle the OS being set to en_US but Siri being set to en_GB. Handy.

Broke the seal on allowing an LLM access to personal data - my food/macros logging, mostly so I can vaguely describe what I had to eat and it'll actually do it properly (fuzzy, low consequence task that fits an LLM, I think). It did then immediately slam me for eating a choc muffin. Good, I think?

Look, sometimes the local 9/11 memorial event makes the news and not for "wow, what a great idea" reasons.

This post is unavailable.

Love the scene around weird Chinese gaming handhelds where I can get a SteamOS-like and thus a full KDE desktop working. It even supports external monitors and peripherals!

Also given that a lot of the games on actual Steam run great under Proton and FEX to make them work on ARM, I have to assume Valve are working on one of these.

Overbought for my Home Assistant raspi a couple years ago with a 400GB SD card, so now doing fdisk shenanigans to move the install onto a 64GB card so I can reclaim the big one.

Redid the Scaled Industries "front office" a little with some of the new artwork, very happy with how these look together. Not that I get many visitors, but still nice to have some of my own art up at the workshop.

No car this side of the Cook Strait but that’s no issue - caught the rather decent train to Paekākāriki and enjoyed a nice 10km along the Escarpment Track!

For some reason, in my head, The Beehive in Wellington was hexagonal. Having seen it I now get it, but I still think a hex-based extension wouldn’t go amiss.

Sad I can't be at #djangoconus this week but I chose #pyconau this year after a few years of missing it. It will be the very first Djangocon US I have not attended, remarkably, but my role in the framework is also very minimal these days, so mostly a loss for me not being able to see everyone!

After 2,150km of driving and 130km of hiking, I am finally on the ferry across to Wellington. It’s been almost perfect pacing for a road trip for me; not sure I’ll drive the whole way next time, and focus more on longer hikes in the lower South Island, but it’s been really worth it this time.

Final big driving section today up to Nelson, which fortunately had lovely weather, and I went up to the (surveyors') Centre Of New Zealand as well as the local dam. Storm last night left a lot of debris further south - only got a little ways into Old Ghost Road before two downed trees stopped me.

Also Nelson seems rather lovely, and is improved by having a proper Roast Shop so I can get an entire roast dinner takeaway in ten minutes (why does the UK not do this?)

The winter weather pendulum swung back today - lots of drizzle/rain moved in, so I did a couple of short hikes and called it (but fortunately, this was my planned "rest day" in Hokitika anyway). So have three photos from yesterday, as I forgot to post some, plus a very cloudy Arthur's Pass!

Big fan of my hotel owner in Hokitika, Phil, who has informed me which is the best fish and chippy (the one that serves shark) and that the Thatcher & Small restaurant is "not named after that one".

Also I am one of only two people at the motel tonight, which is one step up from yesterday. It's funny, though, Hokitika feels like a big town compared to the tiny places I've been in for a few days now. There are two supermarkets! Two!

Also, tonight I am staying in Haast, population 100. According to the motel owner, I am apparently the only overnight guest in the entire town tonight. It's lovely here though.

Mostly a travel day today, heading back down and then around from Aoraki to the West Coast. But that doesn't mean there wasn't anything to see, including a short hike to the Blue Pools!

No cheating today - 14km of hiking around the Aoraki National Park trail system, including some very nice swing bridges (apparently quite new!), and all the way up to the glacier lake, which I think had a calving quite recently.

Up to Otago today, and with unexpectedly nice weather I found myself a seat on a helicopter tour over to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi and back. With a stop on a glacier! Absolutely incredible (if a little spendy). But I also need to come back and hike some of this in the summer, it's just so beautiful.

Final thing for today, as it was a 28 hour long travel day and I shouldn't do _too_ much, was popping down to a wonderfully overcast Slope Point to bump my "furthest south" number as high as it's ever been. At least until I finally get to Antartica.

Due to the hurricane next to Hawai’i we have basically had to go straight out of SFO and then just turn left, but looks like I will hopefully still make my connection in AKL! Decently bumpy ride though.

Airborne for the first leg of my "relaxing" holiday! It's only DEN ✈ SFO ✈ AKL ✈ IVC 🚘 PCN 🚒 WLG ✈ BNE ✈ SFO ✈ DEN

Air New Zealand: You have a 14kg carryon weight limit, with 10kg max per bag. My bags: 9.5kg and 3.5kg (yes, for a two-week trip!)

Ah yes, the two major parties, a useless racist who claimed he was "fighting against the establishment" and a bin. Back to the investigation with you Nigel!

To celebrate #InternationalCatDay please enjoy this picture of the boys relaxing after a play session with their favourite chase toy and then some churus!

Bit of a slow week this week given my partner was sick and I'm (still) recovering from EMF, but finally got all the bits of my NZ trip booked, so excited to have an actual holiday soon!

It's less hot today (yay!) due to the massive plume of wildfire smoke blocking the sun (whoops). The air purifiers I stocked up on during the winter are working well, though both me and my partner feel it when we step outside.

I am officially Very Pleased with how this new generation of terrain art has come out and so I'll hopefully have them up and available for purchase in the next few days or so!
