A very mundane but oddly compelling thint about going from renting to owning on the same estate is that I now feel like I am looped into a world of petty dramas via factors letters I didn't get previously. This week, a big tree was slated for removal, but "a number of strong objections" saved it

Previously, we had the installation of a Residents Only sign to end the scourge of foreigners to the estate coming in and letting their dugs shite on our grass Deeply, deeply unimportant stuff, barely matters, yet it compels me, and I wonder what I missed my first 3.5yrs here as a renter

Unconscious bias training in work today listed various types of person. Early on, someone who has snakes. Then piercings, tattoos, and cats. At each of those, folk were like "you know who has those? People with snakes" Cut to me delightedly messaging my tattoed, pierced, snake and cat owning ex

Folk working in the social security space rejoice - an end to the Carer's Allowance cliff edge! Well, I know what several of us meeting Scottish Finance Sec next week are going to be pushing to be replicated for Carer Support Payment...

Blizzard 🤝 Nintendo We're going to launch major nostalgia-fests for, roughly, millennial aged gamers on basically the same day (European time) because we're spiteful companies who want to consume your lives

This one always makes me laugh when I remember it because the thing is not all weans would have been as oblivious as me and I definitely would have said I had a present from the Lodge, so there are other weans I was talking to who would have been like "... fuckin hell his Grandpa's an Orangeman"

Allan Faulds@afaulds.bsky.social

And I also know that I can't offhandedly mention that when I was a wean "the Lodge" my grandpa was part of always gave out cheap pressies to the (grand)weans of members without adding "OH, ERR, MASONIC, NOT ORANGE!", but as a wean, genuinely, I was totally oblivious to this whole thing!

Not intended to like contradict Mags here but also like it's surprisingly possible *even in the west Central Belt* to grow up largely oblivious. As an adult I know my very Rangers-supporting dad nixed baby names my mum liked because they were, ahem, associated with a more Celtic persuasion...

It's not until late Primary School that I hear folk calling our school the "Proddy School" and I ultimately realise, oh, ohhh, OHHHHH, there's a reason St Primary are our local rivals and not Non Denom Primary, even though Non Denom was right next to St Primary Is this good though? Uhhh, Very Not

The instinct here might be to view Burnham as uniquely successful and gifted, but we should all remember it is instead that Starmer was uniquely shit and incapable and but for Truss he would easily be the worst PM of my lifetime (And also that GPEW have spent 6 months devouring their own feet)

Mark McGeoghegan@markmcgeoghegan.bsky.social

Can't go back to 1963, but @ipsosintheuk.bsky.social voting intentions go back to 1976. Burnham's Labour have seen the biggest 100 days increase in voting intention of any new Lab or Con leader since Kinnock, and the largest of any PM replacing a PM of the same party in that half-century period.

I know some folk get furious when you suggest Starmer is worse than Johnson or indeed any Tory PM but this is not a judgement based on how much I agree or disagree with their *policies* but whether they were good at "being PM" in and of itself and sorry, even Johnson beat Starmer at that basic task!

My body still cannot quite sleep all the way until normal wakeup time, but at least I got to wake up to another stunning victory over the fash, maybe more places should do stunning victories over the fash

The other upside I suppose is it meant I could go for a cycle before work which I desperately need after one, my big holiday, and two, last week being the first week this year I missed my one hour a day average exercise, trying to keep vaguely healthy is terrible

Hungary and now Serbia: Kinda bored of this whole despotism thing, maybe we should try something new? The rest of Europe for some reason:

Also very funny to see Vučić is apparently giving it "it was the Americans, they rigged this", as if the current American administration is somehow opposed to right wing despots in Europe, like yeah, the country whose VP actively campaigned for Orbán definitely wanted to bring you down

Tee hee, I am the NDP Premier of British Columbia with a tiny majority, two years left on my term, and consistently lagging my opponents in the polls, HOWEVER, their leader just resigned so I'm going to call a snap election whilst they are in disarray and it'll all work out great for me 🤭 Uh whoops

I'm not best pleased it's cancelled climbing in the morning, given I haven't climbed in like 5 weeks now, but I do always quite enjoy the nice snug feeling of listening to a big storm from the comfort of the sofa

It's genuinely incredible how - and I know this is quite common on the internet for all topics - I have never once encountered someone who made one of the exaggerated claims about STV's benefits, had the flaw pointed out, and gone "oh, fair enough, I still support it though"

I am a mega electoral reform obsessive, but I am very keenly aware of the tradeoffs in my preferred system. Try to tell an STV advocate that "parties stand as many candidates as they think they can elect, which means voters do not have meaningful choice" though! It's like you've shat on their floor!

Voters: We hate pylons! Also, we really hate energy bills going up! Political parties, for some reason: Yeah okay we hear you, pylons suck, so we're going to reduce/get rid of them in favour of more expensive options! Can, uh, can you just never look at your energy bills again though? As a favour?

Euan Healey@euanhealey.bsky.social

I'm sorry I actually can't get over Plaid Cymru trying to ban new electricity pylons. Utterly ridiculous tinpottery.

Between the SNP getting back behind functionally unrestricted oil and gas extraction and Plaid Cymru wanting a moratorium on pylons, the UK's nationalist administrations are not exactly covering themselves in climate-glory, are they? Mortifying

Oh sure it was a great idea to spend three weeks on the opposite side of the globe, but did I consider I would have to do four (4) catch-up pieces on my entirely voluntary elections website in quick succession? Was it truly worthwhile for this suffering? (Yes obviously)

I know there will be a button somewhere to turn it off that I need to find, but the things you will get notifications for these days: no I do not in fact need a *text* (a text! to my phone! like it's 2007!) to tell me you've received my pension contribution, I know that from my payslip, thanks

I was as annoyed as anyone that Mass Effect: Andromeda was such a swing and a miss and was very sceptical of the plan of "actually we're doing a sequel to that and the original trilogy at the same time" but I'm even more annoyed to not at least see what that ultimately looked like

Man shocked to discover that his body clock is still absolutely wrecked three whole days after returning from three weeks of being 12 hours ahead

Sorry this is so on my brand but I do kind of feel when the UK Government takes a decision about oil and gas in Scotland maybe we could hear from the Scottish Green Party instead of just the "Green Party Leader" who is in fact only responsible for England and Wales?

Obviously the whole thing about climate change is it affects everyone so I'm not saying we shouldn't hear from GPEW but also like hi, the fossil fuels are in Scottish waters and the Scottish Greens are independent, so maybe, like, BBC could do with not treating ZP as a UK-wide leader all the time?

This is consistently my position: it's annoying when someone jumps ship for no good reason, but it's impossible to craft a rule that auto-expels only those people and cannot be used by parties to exert control over internal critics and dissenters.

In a Holyrood context there's an extra edge to this because the mixed voting system means people love to pretend that Constituency MSPs are personally elected on their own merits in a way List MSPs aren't, which is a very minor reason but nonetheless still a reason to not have two classes of MSP

Just one more departure from Reform UK at Holyrood and Scottish Labour will have the wriggle room necessary to go "yeah, the Irshad Ahmed selection was... questionable, we're going to address it"

The National@scotnational.bsky.social

BREAKING: A Reform MSP has quit Nigel Farage's party The Scottish Parliament confirmed the resignation, which means Labour is now Holyrood's second biggest party

I LOVE MY NORMAL BEDDING

Allan Faulds@afaulds.bsky.social

I do think it needs to be noted the way that Kiwis do bedding is perverted, they have a duvet and then they like... sandwich it between two sheets rather than have a single duvet cover??? Oh so you think you're too good for the rest of your washing to build a new life in the big sock?

Oh how am I taking a spate of cancellations and delays to the trains on the last, 10 minute section of my journey home? As we approach the completion of hour 44 of travelling? Extremely well, the most well, I don't want to pull all my skin off and scream in exhausted frustration

I wish I could find the humour in a classic Scotrail network collapse being the first thing I encounter back home but actually I do just want to lie down on the platform and cry so that's not great, I just want to go home

Tonight in "Allan uses in flight entertainment to catch up on critically acclaimed films": Sinners Nice, light, chill, upbeat viewing for the middle of the night...

I feel like I managed a decent amount of plane sleep afterwards but feeling very exhausted to still have 2.5hrs left, somehow feels like we've been over Transylvania (thematically apt) for hours (it's been like 20 minutes) Had a great time but I do not prosper on long haul is my conclusion

If you want an indication of how unhinged I am becoming at 22 hours of being awake so far and that only being halfway to home and bed, I have messaged at least 5 friends to tell them how good I think circling the big plughole in the Jewel's fountain would feel

Also very unnerved by how easy it was for me to get back into Changi having went landside for the tour - walked in off the street, scanned my boarding pass, and that was it. No security (though I had left my bag in the airport anyway) check or anything. Wild!

Also I got one last Kiwi blast on the plane to Singapore by watching Hunt for the Wilderpeople which I had never seen before and somehow had not expected it to be so emotional - should have foreseen being sad about Sam Neill mind you

Just as Ranginui wept after Tāne separated him from Papatūānuku, I'm shedding a wee tear to be separated from Aotearoa New Zealand after a phenomenal, once in a lifetime trip 😭 Just the most amazing country, simply won't have a better experience the rest of my days.

Just desperately sad news - I'd never met Sinéad in person but moved in the same political circles online and she was always so lovely and warm hearted, what a bitterly unfair age to go at

Awful loss to Scottish politics with the passing of @sinead1988.bsky.social this week. One of the kindest people I had the pleasure of meeting through ScotPol online. Always saw the best in others and was first to offer solidarity and sympathy to those who needed it.
