Hi, I'm Airylan. I haven't really done much social media stuff in the past, despite being online since the 90s. I paint miniatures, play games of all kinds, and know far too much about the history of gaming (and Games Workshop/ Warhammer in particular). Here's a bunch of minis I painted last year.

I'm a big fan of Scranton PA's own Cynthia Rothrock. Even when a movie she's in is dumb, she shines. And I think I came up with a good description of her default character: she's Bruce Lee crossed with Cindy Lauper.

Repost if $30k would change your life right now

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

I don't think $30k is a life-changing amount of money. Median American born in 1980 will have $2m in income in their lifetime. It's a 1% increase in earnings.

A lot of my hobby time recently has gone into this model. I started building it in mid 2024 and been working on and off since then. It's the Coaching Inn from an old White Dwarf Modelling Workshop article. I still have details to go through and the like, but now that I did the ground, I can post it

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.

brettcodes.comI'm done using AIWhy I'm stopping using AI for coding (and anything else) after using it earnestly for a year and coming to understand the harms it causes on personal, societal, and environmental levels.

And then this piece is getting a lot of love on Twitter too rn so I’ll post it here too 🙂‍↕️ always wanted Daphne and thorn to kiss when I was younger

So I finished some D&D minis recently, as gifts for my friends, representing the characters we played in our Kingmaker campaign years ago. And a few others, like an aaracokra for my spouse joining the party, and a wererat for the GM. I put my mini I used then in the group picture too.

This shit is why you can't separate continuing to financially support the Harry Potter IP (whether by buying the games, merch, watching the new TV show when its out) from the consequences of what JK Rowling does with that money She's become so stiflingly powerful that even private docs arent safe

I got my house Pride right here. #FuckTimHortons #NoTerfs #TransLivesAreHumanLives Everything about this cross marketing steaming pile of turd makes me want to vomit. They're doing this during Canadian Pride month.

So, my new computer has had btrfs filesystem corruption twice in two weeks. There's no hints this will happen, just "oops your filesystem is dead, have fun reinstalling Linux again." I know I get unusual errors with computers, but this is unusable.

Rare political talk but I am getting so fucking tired of being told to put up with transphobia from the left just because the right is worse. I'm fucking tired of having to choose between a fast or slow erosion of my rights and being told to shut up and accept it.

I want to muse about (minis wargame) game design again. The other day I went on about how movement rates can make a game feel one way or another. Slow, pondering, a good pace, or immediately into the action. I haven't *yet* written a minis wargame, mind, but I've read and played so many while...

all of Strength, Toughness, Wounds, Damage, Armour Save, and Armour Penetration. That's a lot of dials to tweak! And it'll affect things differently, and they're inter-dependent. And *largely* I want to talk about them when I muse about the effects of the combat system whatever it is on the game's

feel, but thinking about "lethality" of "rate of change of size of army" is an interesting thing. It also kind of implies that replacing units to represent reserves or something like that is *negative* lethality, which is also fun to think about. Anyway. I think next time will be shooting ranges.

per turn. Otherwise the game will just take too long. Conversely, when an army is half as large, taking 5 turns, and 2.5h, if you're removing that much of an army per turn, then that ends up being far too quick, as any element you remove no longer affects the rest of the game, removing elements...

from a smaller army has a proportionately larger effect. Unlike movement rates, and shooting ranges, and other things like that, it's hard to *quantify* lethality of a system in a way that we can look at and tweak. Not impossible, but difficult. In a Warhammer like system, it's related to

be. This is kind of musing around "modern 40k" and lethality. A lot of people, especially those who gravitate to older editions of 40k, see the current game as far too lethal. But that's a factor mostly of three things, seeing 40k lethality over time: 1. how large an army, 2. how many turns...

the game will take, and 3. how long clock time a game will take. Modern 40k wants you to be done in about 6 turns in about 2.5 hours. And since "tabling" an opponent is a viable path to victory, if it's done soon enough, you want the capability in system to remove between 1/6 and 1/4 of an army

DBA, removing three elements is in fact the goal. But it's also a pacing mechanism. In that sense, it's a function of how large an army you want the game to support, and how long you want a game to be. DBA, every army is exactly 12 elements, removing 3 of them means the end of the game...

so in that framework, if it were *trivial* to remove an element, a game would be super quick. If it were *difficult* to remove an element, the game would take forever. In the game as it is, it'll happen, but not super commonly, so the game ends up being about as long as you'd want a "fast" game to..

studying the rules and how they make the game feel. So from that sense I feel I have an idea of what I'm talking about, especially as I narrow down what I want out of a wargame myself, and what I want to write. I was planning to talk about shooting ranges and options there next, but I think I've...

got another more interesting topic. "Lethality". Basically, the rate at which models come off the table. It's a function of a lot of things! one of them is: "is removing the opponent's army a viable path to victory?" In something like 40k, the answer has always been "yes". In something like ...

Without saying your age, what's your favourite movie that came out when you were 18? Fellowship of the Ring. I saw it with my family, including my grandmother, who while she didn't understand "Fantasy", loved watching a movie with her kids and grandkids, and being reminded of visiting New Zealand.

So, a while ago, someone asked the question if there was a 1995ish era Ultramarine with a plasma gun, painted by GW. At the time, I did a pretty deep dive, looking at all the 2nd edition Codicies, rulebooks, battle reports, articles with Ultramarines, even the 3rd edition codex, ultimately ending..

Up finding this model, which at the time looked to me like a plasma gun with red casing and yellow coils. Which would be strange because that's not how GW paints 2nd edition plasma guns. On closer inspection, it's actually a flamer. So. I can't find a plasma *gun* not on a razorback before 1996..

But I missed a piece in my research. I'd limited my White Dwarf looks because there's so much. I shouldn't have. I was flipping through old WD again recently, and WD200 had this one right there in the new releases material. This picture appears in September 1996. So: red casing, black coils and grip
