We must return to the rough-and-tumble grassroots terrain of political organizing, to the everyday, unglamorous work of building and sustaining collective forms of existence that make life a little less dependent on competition, debt, exhaustion and luck.

Perhaps the problem is that while this world was taking shape, an important part of the left continued to look for the people where it had last left them. And when it could no longer find them there, it concluded, all too quickly, that someone must have deceived them.

For if democracy itself cannot produce that experience, we should not be so surprised when, election after election, part of the country seems increasingly willing to bet on the end of the world.

The crucial question, therefore, was not simply how to prevent its propaganda, but why such a substantial portion of the population chose—and chose again—this political project.

It is no way to live. Life beyond work can mean twelve- or fourteen-hour days making deliveries or driving for apps, selling goods online, accumulating credit-card debt, registering as a micro-entrepreneur, borrowing money, and caring for one’s own and others’ children.

Harrowing stories have emerged across the continent of Africans duped by promises of well-paid civilian work in Russia. From South Africa to Togo and Cameroon, a sophisticated network of recruiters has kept African labour flowing to the Russian frontline.

As the war in Ukraine approaches its sixth winter, Russia is losing an estimated 30,000 soldiers a month and both sides have become increasingly reliant on foreign fighters to plug the gaps in their armed forces. Most are from poorer countries.

"Western social democracies are starting to feel more and more like these peripheral formations. The centre is shrinking and the periphery is actually expanding. There's something exceptional about the way that capitalism formed around the security of the nation-state."

"In places that have been abandoned by the state, people are forced to fend for themselves. New forms of solidarity, survival, self-defence do emerge. We cannot depend on the state for any of this." — Kanishka Goonewardena

"The commune form is not necessarily restricted to a local scale. The ambition is to become a node in a network of similarly self-determined popular organizations, eventually extending its scope in an internationalist kind of way." — Kanishka Goonewardena

"It's easy to find statements that suggest that we're now in a period of disorder, chaos, and therefore that politics cannot have much ambition. It's not a disorderly chaotic situation. It's organised in non-trivial, recognizable ways." — Gabriel Tupinambá

Who ends up fighting in a war that isn't theirs, and how do they get there? The Kenyan government estimates that more than 1,000 Kenyans have been recruited to fight for Russia, many after responding to ads for civilian jobs.

In this episode of The Slow Newscast, Stephen tells how an offer of security work in Russia took him to the front line in Ukraine. The episode is part of Alameda’s After Order project, examining the transformation of sovereignty in a time of catastrophe.

But nature of the British deep state — and indeed the modern Labour Party — means that Burnham will face severe difficulties in turning the ideas in Head North into lasting constitutional reforms.

Having witnessed the crumbling of Labour’s Blairite consensus at first hand in the 2015 leadership campaign, Burnham reinvented himself as a different kind of Labour politician.

In Alameda’s After Order Working Paper Series, Gabriel Tupinambá explores how social movements and territorial organisations are building new forms of popular sovereignty from below.
