Closing Radio 4 Extra will not create savings of note. It commissions no original programmes. It pays modest radio royalties, producers and hosts. That's it. So the BBC archive is gonna be left to collect dust?

BBC Radio 4 Extra is my most important cultural resource, and so inexpensive in comparitive terms. Closing it is disaster for those who love public service radio. Ugh. Grr. Down with this kind of thing.

3. The parliament itself once had an artist in residence, just as royal courts once had truth-telling jesters. The Wee Parly also exhibits art. The loss of this field of civic activity beyond the gallery, especially in rural locations, offered an alternative to art as commerce...

4. and allowed artists to promote progressive ideas which, for instance, help ameliorate climate breakdown. This has made culture much poorer. It has encouraged artists to turn towards fantasies of the self, as the loss of agency pinches their aspirations.

2... due to funding cuts in the post-crash era, we have lost a vast field of activity where creative people worked in collaboration with all kinds of organisations, from community woodlands, to renewable energy, to hospitals and patient-led organisations, to rewilding estates.

Regardless of the result, the Holborn by-election was as good an argument as you will get for Labour to introduce PR now and establish a seawall against the far right parties.

1937’s utterly gorgeous Penguin Books building in Harmondsworth, Middlesex. Several decades after Penguin moved to central London, this lovely, historic Art Deco gem was pulled down. Which was just wrong.
