Family Group Conferencing for adults - our new network putting people and families at the heart of care planning. @nicksinclair.bsky.social with Hartlepool’s Carole Keay-Bolton on stage at the ADASS northern curiosity event Better outcomes, more independence and an average of £1,500 saving

Top tips: 1 Go where the people are. Not just the bigger VCFSE sector organisations. 2 work through trustee intermediaries 3 treat communities as delivery partners not just referral sources

Cultural barriers to social care services in Hull where global majority communities are underrepresented. The community sector is the real front door. Hull council in partnership with Herts University

At yesterday’s Second Reading of the Health Bill in the House of Lords, Baroness Glenys Thornton, Chair of the Board at SCIE, called for the voice of people who draw on care and support to remain capable of challenging the system. For the full Reading, see: www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/...

Sir David Robinson of the Relationships Project closes the Local Area Coordination national gathering with why relationships should be central to all public and private services - not just LAC. Relationships work - they are the strongest indicator of the success of services.

Extraordinarily, the aftermath of the Japanese tsunami, the strength of social capital was a more significant determinant of fatalities than the height of the sea wall. (Aldrich 2023)

We should trade off high-time / low-reward transactional relationships, replacing them with tech for instance, to invest in deep relationships where they are most needed.

The Local Area Coordination (LAC) National Gathering kicks off at our partners at UCL with welcome from Tom Richards. 40 people in the room and 60 online, including newest LAC area Leicester City, and Brent whom we are supporting to build on the learning from LAC for their wider prevention work.

Hazel Cuthbertson from South Tyneside describes their Thinking Together work, to enable groups of people who access LAC to shape services. Bringing learning from participants back into the council (what Human Learning Systems would call learning cycles) is a key strategic role for LACs.

Greenwich is drawing on learning from its Community and Micro-enterprise programme to drive the shift to neighbourhood health and community support in partnership with the VCSE sector

Banke has established a mental health support enterprise that “allows me to give back to the community that raised me” now supporting 5 people and with big ambition for the future. This is Neighbourhood Health in action.

I have heard commissioners consistently say they want: - Support which has a clear model for building independence with people considered complex - help to put together business cases with an ROl that convinces (sceptical) FDs - convincing that the Not for Profit sector offer is distinctive

In the not for profit sector we should be able to demonstrate that difference: - enabling people to build independence through Community, purpose & citizenship - Coproducing support at individual, organisation & place level - compelling offers for Direct Payment & Personal Health Budget holders

Our Catalyst, Joseph Espindola, helped Antony, who is autistic, to realise his vision of creating an inclusive travel business using his experience to help people with learning disabilities to travel confidently and independently. Together, they developed AJ’s Travel.

We enjoyed virtual community capacity building with thoughtful & creative DHSC civil servants yesterday- one quote about the value of our Thinking Outside the Box session: “We can’t see community from Whitehall!” The DHSC team came up with great ideas for how to scale up asset-based prevention.

Great to meet Local Area Coordinators across London and the South East today, talking strategy to grow and strengthen the national network, staying true to its principles which are needed now more than ever

The shift to relational services saves money. Using gov estimate - 363,000 people experiencing ‘severe and multiple disadvantage’ (3+ of homelessness, mental ill-health, substance misuse and violence and abuse) implies reductions in wasteful & duplicative use of over £18 billion in England alone

Helen Sanderson has written a book on psychological safety & says it’s crucial to relational services. It can’t just be trained. The best organisational development model is: - 20% training and skills - 10% applying skills in the workplace - 70% what behaviours managers role model day to day

Sandra makes the point that if all of an area’s commissioning ends up in a procurement process, they are not using the full range of ways to act eg investment partnerships where more flexibility may be easier to achieve

The panel reflect on the gap between where the drive for system change comes from - senior leaders - & who carries the regulatory & procurement risks of doing things radically: junior officers in procurement, data, performance. Senior leaders serious about change need to find ways to own the risks

Sandra Hamilton of @stonekingllp.bsky.social sets out her work supporting councils and ICBs to shift from procurement to partnership with aligned providers, using the existing light touch regime. This works but really needs a gov procurement regime designed for people services

Enjoying listening to Camden colleagues describing adult family group conferencing: adults with all kinds of challenges are supported by a network blending informal and professional supporters, building on Maui practices from New Zealand. We support the national network
