Went to a bookbinders fair last weekend. Bought some nice goodies: marbled paper, leather soap, a skiving tool and two pieces of blue leather. The skiving tool is sharp, so I made a crude little holder for it out of a piece of an old boot.

Made another Magic book #vorthos This combines a 2008 story article by Rei Nakazawa with tooltips that appeared on Arena earlier this year.

Another step closer to a full set. Nine more to go. Ten if I want a Dutch Arena to go with Fluisterwoud (Whispering Woods).

One year ago today, we forked MTG Wiki from its previous hosting. We've had a busy year, averaging more than 200 edits per day!

Wednesday 31 December #mtg1997calendar Vexing Arcanix "Though the Arcanix burns through a deck only half as fast as a Millstone, it has the added benefit of doing damage to your opponent. And if you can peek at your own library, it doubles as a Jayemdae Tome."

Tuesday 30 December #mtg1997calendar Voodoo Doll "This fetish can tie a wizard’s will to the lifeforce of a target, allowing the wizard to inflict great suffering upon the victim by simple concentration."

Monday 29 December #mtg1997calendar Polar Kraken "This huge creature is expensive to keep in play for very long, but it works well if you sacrifice it to the Homarid Spawing Bed to gain eleven 1/1 creatures."

Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 December #mtg1997calendar Illusionary Terrain “I started to explore the similarities between waves, plains, and snow-banks. Next thing I knew, there was the picture, with an almost Escher-like sense of shifting and altering.” –Rob Alexander

Friday 26 December #mtg1997calendar Fire Drake "A common predator in Dominaria, these creatures are able to breathe fire at a whim. During the summer mating season, the numerous small forest fires are usually blamed on these dragon-like creatures."

Thursday 25 December #mtg1997calendar Order of the White Shield "During the years leading up to the reversal of the Ice Age by the planeswalker Freyalise, Lucilde Fiksdotter led this Order of knights to great honor and esteem."

Wednesday 24 December #mtg1997calendar Swords to Plowshares "Besides being an efficient way to remove your opponent’s creatures, Swords to Plowshares also provides an excellent last-minute defense, allowing you to stay alive by Swords-to-Plowsharing your own creature."

Tuesday 23 December #mtg1997calendar Whirling Dervish "With every victory comes pride, and with that pride comes the belief that one is considered infallible by one’s enemies. Most wizards recognize pride as blind folly."

Monday 22 December #mtg1997calendar Fungusaur "By inflicting damage on Fungusaur from your own spells and effects, you can raise one of these smalls-starting creatures to mammtoh proportions in no time."

Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 December #mtg1997calendar Cold Snap “I was displeased with the original Cold Snap, so I painted this one; when I turned it in, I was still not confident. Months later, I painted another version, too late to replace this one.” –Randy Gallegos

Thursday 18 December #mtg1997calendar Serra Aviary "Nestled in the center of Aysen – without a single cage – the Aviary is so beautiful and peaceful that even the wild mesa falcons, which never deign to enter other human habitations, sometimes visit here."

Wednesday 17 December #mtg1997calendar Mind Ravel "A nice addition to a “discard” deck, this card allows you to relieve an opponent of a card while getting ahead in cards yourself. (As a cantrip, Mind Ravel lets you draw another card.)"

Tuesday 16 December #mtg1997calendar Thunder Spirit "Though similar to air elementals in nature, these creatures are far more intelligent and are known to inflict fierce storms upon their enemies."

Monday 15 December #mtg1997calendar Pale Bears "The Pale Bears are one of the few creatures from the Ice Age expansion that have the landwalking ability of non-native land types."

Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 December #mtg1997calendar Armor of Faith “The security in one’s deity brings out the finest aspects of a warrior, a constant reminder of pride and honor. The hand encompasses its faithful herds and sheds the blows of the enemy.” –Anson Maddocks

Friday 12 December #mtg1997calendar Mana Crypt "Anyone who practices magic knows the lure of the mana housed in a mana crypt, but those truly skilled in the arts steer clear of the crypt’s randomness by avoiding it completely."

Thursday 11 December #mtg1997calendar Magnetic Mountain "A veritable treasure lies here within plain view but is guaranteed never to be taken by mortal hand."

Wednesday 10 December #mtg1997calendar Lhurgoyf "At a casting cost of four, this creature is one of the best bargains in green. Just don’t put too many in your deck, as this handsome beast is not of much use until the middle-to-late game."

Tuesday 9 December #mtg1997calendar Takklemaggot "A disgusting creature, this being seems to have no purpose other than feeding, and those wizards who summon a Takklemaggot usually end up becoming its dinner."

Monday 8 December #mtg1997calendar The Hive "Although five colorless mana is slightly expensive for a 1/1 flier, The Hive’s ability to create artifact creatures (Wasps) at instant speed more than compensates for its cost."

Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 December #mtg1997calendar Winter Blast “At the time, my favorite paint color was pthalocylene blue, and for this piece I using nothing but.” –Kaja Foglio

Friday 5 December #mtg1997calendar Orgg "The size and strength of these gore/orc crossbreeds make them valuable as warriors, but unfortunately they also inherit the cowardliness and stupidity of both of their ancestral lines."

Thursday 4 December #mtg1997calendar Sengir Autocrat "These men and women, chosen to watch over the marsh towns by Baron Sengir, are both honored and doomed. If any under their charge try to escape and are caught by Sengir’s forces, it is the autocrats who suffer first."

Wednesday 3 December #mtg1997calendar Krovikan Sorcerer "For an interesting trick, try putting the Krovikan Sorcerer into a blue and black deck. Then use the sorcerer to discard a large creature (gaining a card in the process), and bring it back into play with Animate Dead."

Tuesday 2 December #mtg1997calendar Northern Paladin "In the Northern Domains lies Icehaven, a frozen land inhabited by warriors and giants. The shining light of this land is the kingdom of Parma and its paladins, friends of all who oppose chaos and evil."

Monday 1 December #mtg1997calendar Sol RIng "Providing two colorless mana for just a single mana casting cost, the Sol Ring is one of the most efficient mana producers in the game."

Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 November #mtg1997calendar Craw Wurm "The watercolor artwork that Daniel Gelon did for the Scaled Wurm in Ice Age is a revisitation upon his original Craw Wurm in the Alpha edition of Magic."

Friday 28 November #mtg1997calendar Sea Sprite "These imps often tease fishermen, entangling lines, releasing fish, and otherwise plaguing the land-dwellers. But casting coins or other shiny objects into the water will usually distract the flighty creatures."

Thursday 27 November #mtg1997calendar Primal Order “The land calls to its ancients self, the daughter sings to her sleeping Mother. When She awakens, all who have defaced Her child will die in the righteous blaze of Her maternal rage.” –Anya, Willow Priestess

Wednesday 26 November #mtg1997calendar Karplusan Yeti "The Karplusan Yeti is basically a reusable Lightning Bolt that works only on creatures. Add a creature enchantment or two, and the Yeti can get even nastier."

Alright it’s been a minute. It’s time for another Vorthos Round-Up! If you make Magic lore, story, or art content (I’m deliberately leaving this broad) please reply here! If you have a favorite Magic Story creator, shout them out here.

Tuesday 25 November #mtg1997calendar Sylvan Library "Engraved in living wood, the information contained within these well-guarded sanctuaries spans the ages, dating back to before the birth of the great oaks planted by the elves centuries ago."

Monday 24 November #mtg1997calendar Norritt "Norritt, nicknamed “Ig”, has a cute trick: Turn it blue with a Thoughtlace and then tap it infinitely to untap itself. It’s also wonderful combined with Zuran Spellcasters or for untapping big creatures."

Saturday 22 & Sunday 23 November #mtg1997calendar Venom "This piece is one of the few Tom has painted for Magic cards without using any airbrush techniques. It is done entirely with watercolors and colored pencil."
