Recently I learned that what has sprung up in the stretch along the fence between our property and the neighbors’ cow pasture that I cleared earlier this year and attempted to put wildflowers in (none of the flower seeds did anything) is in fact perilla mint, which is toxic to cattle.

And the aster that we’d moved from in front of the tractor is doing pretty well, in spite of being chomped on and uprooted by deer earlier in the summer. It may be shorter than it was when we moved it, but the bees are enjoying it all the same.

We collected a bunch of seeds from the Joe Pye and the Susans and some wingstem and boneset, and hope to grow them next year in some of the places where we’ve cleared out the invasives. Haven’t done cold stratification before, so that’ll be fun.

It spread over from their side of the fence, there’s a lot over there and there wasn’t any here until after I cleared out the multiflora rose and Japanese honeysuckle that had been occupying that space. Neighbors don’t seem to care, but I do, so yesterday I went out to pull what I could.

I went looking on a local FB group to see if I could find out what went down that the new mayor was posting heated statements about, and I didn’t learn anything there, but I DID learn one of the ladies in the area sees blue jays as spiritual warfare and cited google AI as proof, so.

The AI summary she posted said that the reason forests are quiet on Fridays is that’s the day blue jays bring sticks to Satan in Hell or something, they are his messengers, so the video she posted of a blue jay on her lawn is proof of… something?

We went out to harvest some of the squash this morning ahead of the weather change and found two box turtles all cozy under the squash leaves. Did our best to avoid disturbing them, hope they find somewhere more durable to be before the squash is done for the season.

Found a plant growing in my porch flower planter that clearly wasn’t what was supposed to be there. When it got bigger, the plant identifier app I used said it was a sunflower. As an experiment, we planted a sunflower seed from our birdseed in another planter. It is indeed sprouting.

They’re part of why I don’t mind so much that the squirrels climb all over the feeder. Mourning doves are too front-heavy to fit on our feeder, I saw one try once and it didn’t go well. Let the squirrels knock some down so they can eat.

Growing season has been weird this year, but our first Boxcar Willie tomatoes are ripe. The purple calabash tomatoes aren’t ready yet and I don’t think any of the currant tomato plants survived (for reasons we still don’t know, starting seeds indoors went poorly this year, lot of weak plants)

We have two dwarf peach trees out front that had been flowering when the ice storm hit earlier this year, so far fewer peaches than usual and what’s there doesn’t seem to be good. Last year I’d find the pits on the railing, squirrels having eaten the fruit and left me the mess to clean up.

This year the squirrels may take a bite or two and then they either leave the peach on the porch for me to deal with or ‘hide’ it in the flower planter and buddy, you can’t grow a whole tree in there. Besides, I can see it. You didn’t bury it and the plants don’t cover it.

I haven’t minded the squirrels eating some of the birdseed from the feeder; they’re part of the local ecosystem, the peach trees they normally feast from this time of year aren’t producing anywhere near as much as usual thanks to the weather, I don’t want them getting hungry and desperate.

semi-recently someone on old recipe Reddit dug up a baking recipe for ‘moist lettuce bars’ so if you’re trying to avoid parasites that’s an option I guess (some people tried the recipe, said it wasn’t bad, kind of zucchini-bread-esque)

The fireworks are over, Daisy came out long enough to finish her dinner and have a treat before going back under the bed, and I’ve finished trimming the last of the 720 2.25” squares for the quilt I started months ago (got a bit of a repetitive-stress hand muscle twitch from that)
