Articles like this are why I LOVE Commonweal Magazine. "Capitalism is not a “system of natural liberty,” a trucking-and-bartering passion that simply follows the grain of the universe. It arose within history, and, presumably, it will end within history." www.commonwealmagazine.org/pulling-brake

commonwealmagazine.orgPulling the BrakeTwo recent histories of capitalism show its rapacious, violent appetite. How might Catholics contribute to a politics of repair?

That Trump's attacks on Ilhan Omar are so successful among Republicans truly exposes who they are. She is the embodiment of everything they hate: immigrant, dark skin, Muslim, and Left (i.e., foreign, black, jihadi, communist). She's already guilty via identity. They don't need to know the facts.

If Republicans still defend the Confederacy and its "heroes" and symbols, but have now CLEARLY rejected "states' rights," I wonder what it was they ACTUALLY liked about the Confederacy all along, hmmmmmmm.

So, Trump either abandoned our ally (by official agreements) Ukraine because they were blowing up Russian diesel (making Trump look bad at the pumps) or by blowing up a Russian bot farm (making Trump look bad because less fake news). Either way, screw him. (Or, both, of course, but same conclusion.)

As a very conservative Christian (now Catholic), it has become the most disturbing thing in my life to realize that conservative Christians are literally the most destructive and evil force I've ever seen in American politics. It's so disturbing, TBH.

Stunned at the number of "Christians" who think they have to support the modern state of Israel, and its fascist leadership, as they systematically murder thousands, just because their theology is embarrassing 20th century trash.

Once again, the Supreme Court prioritizes imaginary harms done to Trump by not allowing him to indulge in his conspiracy theories, as opposed to the very real harm done to citizens who may lose the ability to vote in this case.

🚨 BREAKING: In a major loss for voters, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to allow the Trump administration to initiate voter roll purges using a flawed database involving Americans' private data. The ruling will disproportionately impact naturalized citizens who've been wrongly flagged in the system.

I'm curious what the 4D chess is, that Trump is supposedly playing, praising Russia, China, and North Korea while viciously attacking Canada and other close allies. Just seems like dictatorship-envy to me.

Again, Christian Nationalism is just another ethno-nationalism, wherein the ethnos is "Christian" (of course, as defined by those seeking to gain political power). Anytime you declare a specific identity or ideology as definitive of the "real" members of a nation or society, you're doing a Hitler.

Why does no one wonder why Rand Paul plays libertarian lite all day every day, but his state is like the third in the nation for taking more federal money than they contribute? Where are the hearings on that bullshit canard? He's a fraud through and through.

Maybe if we could get evangelicals and Republicans to think of every human being as a zygote, they could actually become pro-life. So sick of seeing them celebrate death all day every day, ugh.

I swear many evangelicals are more passionate about the existence of hell than they are of heaven. So long as the "bad guys" suffer for all eternity, after like 12 minutes on earth, they are happy with God. It's their favorite.

Sorry, but one of the most important sentences in history, true or false: "It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but, on the contrary, their social existence determines their consciousness."

Why every election I gotta deal with numbnuts showing me empty red land after an election? Yeah, we know, those heavily populated Blue areas also pay for those twelve hillbillies in the giant Red areas! STFU

It's not so much that Trump is too far right, too conservative, wastes our money, is an asshole, etc. We can debate and vote on that stuff. It's that he's an authoritarian with no regard for our law, our democracy, or our system of government. We should all hate totalitarianism.

"No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." (Matt 6:24) This is political.

yeah man, we’re all just dummies who don’t understand that you’re just judicial monks operating in a sphere of pure law [puts finger to ear] what’s this, clarence thomas gave another speech blaming progressives for hitler?

nbcnews.comChief Justice John Roberts says American public wrongly views the justices as ‘political actors’In remarks at a judicial conference, Roberts bemoaned what he characterized as the American public’s misconceptions about the Supreme Court.

All these "evangelicals" went absolutely crazy over "CRITICAL RACE THEORY!!!" and guess what, assholes, everything CRT said would happen ABSOLUTELY IS happening! So over y'all fake Christians.

Apparently the "Jesus" MAGA follows loves earthly empire, war, racism, misogyny, bigotry, hatred of the poor, lying, adultery, rape, social darwinism, terrorizing the sojourner, etc. Some of us prefer to call that one "The Devil."

🚨BREAKING: According to exclusive research by Democracy Docket, the Supreme Court’s ruling will likely derail at least 28 pro-voting lawsuits that aim to stop state legislatures from drawing electoral maps that dilute the voting power of racial minorities. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

democracydocket.comSupreme Court ruling derails 28 lawsuits defending minority voting rights, Democracy Docket research findsThe legal cases are primarily concentrated in the South, where America’s legacy of racial discrimination still casts the longest shadow over voting rights.

A Supreme Court so fundamentally hostile to the rights of minority voters places the Court at odds with democracy itself. This is the legacy of Chief Justice John Roberts. I opposed his nomination back in 2005, and I stand by that.

Bradly Mason reposted

The court has simply recreated the pre-Brown world in allowing racial discrimination across a broad number fields as long as it is “facially neutral,” gutting the Reconstruction Amendments in the process.
