Impeccable timing as I prepare this week's teaching materials on contemporary far-right iconography/discourse and distant pasts... thanks Marco. www.politico.com/news/2026/10...
Really enjoyed recording this New Books Network pod! We discussed grief as a response to Fascism's emotional regime after Matteotti's murder, commemoration as resistance, & Fratelli d'Italia's negotiation of this uncomfortable reminder Fascism's inherent violence newbooksnetwork.com/the-afterlif...

1/ Far-right leader Roberto Vannacci shared an AI video set in ancient Rome where he sentences to death opposition leaders Schlein and Conte. The gladiator armed with a hammer and sickle is a local representative of National Future who was recently reported for the beating of an Iraqi immigrant.
It's also free to read for two weeks, so now's the time to download if you're interested!
Out (online) today! 🎉 'The Afterlife of a Fascist Murder: Giacomo Matteotti in Myth and Memory, 1924–2024' is an exploration of how his memory shaped Italian antifascism, democratic nation-building, and debates over Fascism’s legacy, including responses from today’s far right. cup.org/3RE9ODE

Digital Trapdoors follows the online lives of a 17-year-old young man and a 22-year-old young woman. It shows how extremist ideas are “microdosed” through entertainment and lifestyle content, radicalising young people before they even realise it. hopenothate.org.uk/digital-trap...

“Teaching Anti-Fascism Today” at @ilcs.bsky.social is off to a great start with Paz Guevara’s keynote. She describes the “Global Fascisms Exhibition,” which presented fascism not only as a historical phenomenon but as an ongoing global threat that transcends its historically confined definition.

Things that would be interesting to know about the current contraction of UK academic staffing (and that it would actually be super helpful if REF2029 institutional SPRE statements were required to report on) include: What's the impact on the equality and diversity of academic staffing? 1/3

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition. Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Not sure I’ll ever recover from seeing kids at the hotel window waving at antifascists, disappearing for a few minutes, and returning with a homemade sign saying ‘thank you’
Vastly outnumbered by antifascists, but nonetheless deeply depressing to watch the so-called ‘Bristol patriots’ march to a refugee hotel with Crusader iconography and chants about extermination. But, in the words of the counter protest, “there are many many more of us than you”

An excellent PhD opportunity for someone to work on family separation during WW1 or WW2. I've done some research on Italian emigrant families separated when the father was serving in the Italian Army and it's a really fascinating area of study. royalhistsoc.org/calendar/phd...
