Pretty surprised by the degree of negative effect of having SMT / hyperthreading enabled in this postgres readonly OLTP benchmark I have been running. Scale 100, -S -M prepared, each client count run for 15s, on a 2x Xeon Gold 6442Y workstation.

Hard to overstate the excellence of this long-read from @shaunwalker7.bsky.social on the Western and Ukrainian intelligence run-up to Russia's full-scale invasion: the Iraq War's legacy, Zelensky v Zaluzhny, the geopolitical forces that shaped what followed. Awesome work, wonderful writing.

A free and democratic society cannot silence comedians because the President doesn’t like what they say. This is an attack on free speech and cannot be allowed to stand. All elected officials need to speak up and push back on this undemocratic act.

Real press failing here. It's crucial that Padilla was roughly forced out in the context of a blatantly authoritarian statement by Noem. @washingtonpost.com doesn't mention Noem's statement, @nytimes.com only mentions it very far down, and not in the summary of the events. bsky.app/profile/just...

Kristi Noem: "We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city." Sen. Alex Padilla is then forcibly removed!

That's some really creepy dictatorial shit.

Happening at #PGConfdev, a different kind of talk from Andres Freund of Microsoft—in which he reflects on one of the most exciting projects in #PostgreSQL 18 with his talk titled: “What went wrong with AIO”

It's just enormously important to understand that the goal of this tariff policy isn't to raise money or to increase manufacturing in the United States. The goal is to make some of the nation's largest companies subject to Trump's personal discretion and dependent on his favor.

Over the last few weeks I've been incrementally merging infrastructure for AIO into postgres. Just now I finally merged the first actual user of AIO ("streaming reads" now can use AIO). It's been a long long road. I've been, with a lot of help along the way, working on this since some time in 2019.

By far the hardest development project I've worked on (and far from done, unfortunately). Lots of thanks are due to collaborators, reviewers, co-workers, employers and family.

I really wonder about reporters (the white ones) in elite political news outlets in Washington DC - are they just going to pretend that this is ok or will they have any shred of humanity to call this out for what this is?

The Atlantic article doesn't quite say what form Hegseth's “TEAM UPDATE.” had, but it sure sounds like it was a document, not just a chat message typed on the phone. Which begs the question of how he even got that information onto the private phone?

THREAD: There’s a dire situation in Vietnam, at the largest Agent Orange spill in the country. When Trump and Marco Rubio cancelled foreign aid, froze funding and began dismantling USAID, those who were cleaning up the Bien Hoa air base had to halt work. 1/

Indeed. As a GC holder with a pending n400 I have the urge to self censor every time I write something public. Much more so than during Trump I. I try to suppress that urge, but I'm sure that a lot gets filtered subconsciously.

How did our country (the U.S.) create and elevate such a group of cowardly, greedy, vain, arrogant, and profoundly insecure men to the highest rungs of power? They bring Zelensky to the Oval Office for what? To mock and denigrate a truly courageous leader & try to bring him down to their base level?

Judge Kollar-Kotelly grilled counsel for the government on DOGE's command structure. Counsel repeatedly said he didn't know the answer to her questions. The judge said the questions are relevant bc she has concerns about whether DOGE is operating constitutionally under the Appointments Clause.

I occasionally wonder how much of the polled network/storage performance gains being talked about are in reality mainly about the effect of CPU idling.

If I instead make the server busy-poll for network activity (by just loopping around non-blocking recv), while waiting for the next query, I get even better numbers than shown there. Even though it's still interrupt based network processing.

By Rubio, Trump and the rest of the GOP which doesn't exactly seem to be pushing back...

Marco Rubio's collaboration with Russia's Sergei Lavrov and Putin is one of the most disgusting acts of betrayal to democracy and our nation. Rubio has secured his place in history of infamy.

Apparently I still can be shocked and surprised. If any of this is true, it's such an utterly pointless use of cruelty. Just straight out intentionally physically harming federal employees.

JUST IN: Another medical horror story in an affidavit from a USAID employee stationed overseas. Says his pregnant wife was not medevac-ed for emergency health care because of directives from DC. Took intervention of a U.S. senator to reverse — but was too late. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Having watched with growing alarm the developments of the last 24 and 36 hours in Washington, I thought I’d take a stab at how the US media would cover this story if it was happening in a foreign country. Here’s that story that should be written this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...

Sometimes I hate performance stuff. How to quickly zero large amounts of memory differs rather vastly between cpu generations. On both systems core and memory are bound to node 0 and the same mmap flags are used (MAP_SHARED | MAP_ANONYMOUS | MAP_HUGETLB | MAP_POPULATE)

I.e on Cascade Lake non-temporal stores suck and it's important to use more than one store per-loop. On Sapphire Rapids it's the other way round. On both ERMSB is considerably worse than the alternatives.

Cascade lake has the added fun that using non-temporal stores on memory on another node is actually a lot faster than what's achievable on the local node. nodebind: 0, membind: 0 1x_mm_stream_si128(): 6.926 GB/s nodebind: 0, membind: 1 1x_mm_stream_si128(): 20.693 GB/s
