There are fundamental changes about every 25 years: 1972: Personal computers. 1993: The web and Dotcom Boom. 2023: LLM AI. Learn to use AI as much as possible. Everything will change. If you miss this wave, the next one will be in 2050. You'll be too old for that one.

the oddest thing... Trader Joe Tote Bags are wildly popular in China, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. a bag is only $2.99 at TJ's, but up to $100 on online shopping sites. limit 5 per customer. hundreds in line. when? it's random. word of mouth. excellent quality.

The Indo-European verb "to be" combines identity, existence, and location in one concept. Chinese has three verbs: shi (是), you (有), zai (在). This has implications for Western philosophy and theology. By using one word with several meanings, thinking becomes muddled

Moon Festival. my photo of Chang-e, the moon goddess, and Yu-tu, her pet jade rabbit. we had moon cakes for dessert.

we talk about the Man in the Moon, but the rabbit is easier to see. turn sideways and blur your eyes: the rabbit is making moon cakes. Australians see the Bunny in the Bubble Bath, which is the easiest to see.

9/11: why did it happen and what did it lead to? watch "Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror" (Netflix documentary). 25 years later, many decisions still affect us today.

that big clump in the middle is a drey, a large squirrel's nest. squirrel builds these like bird nests: branches & twigs for shape plus lots of grass, bark, & leaves. she may have two or three dreys. it's a sphere: she is safe, warm, & dry inside. this drey is 3 feet wide (1m) and 30 feet up (10m)

i've noticed in the last few years the staff at govt offices, banks, insurance companies, etc. don't know their jobs. they do the easy stuff, but complex issues? "That can't be done." we have to explain their job to them and walk them through the steps.

when you get a reply from an AI, remember... - every AI reply is different for every user. - every AI reply is different at different times of the day, your location, and your device. - each AI (Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT...) has different replies.

The web started (realistically) in 1995. - To experience it, one had to be 15 years old or more. - People born in 1980 only knows the digital world. - People under 50 never experienced the analog world. - Only those over 50 remember what it was like to live and work in a world without the web.

the midterm elections are in 71 days. ten weeks. the GOP's lack of preparation is remarkable. they don't even have a message. "Victory in Iran!" okay, not that one. "Affordable food and gas!" not that either. "Datacen..." scratch that too. "The ballroom!"

Jay Cost finds corruption happens when, "... a government that wields more power than it is capable of exercising responsibly, is a government that will produce public policy that favors well-positioned factions over society." Unstructured power breeds corruption.

"Dead Talents Society" movie on Netflix. v funny Chinese movie with great ensemble acting and lots of off-camera jokes. the crew had great fun to make this. it also ridicules social media influencers 😜

we're watching Niu Lai, the hit home-made movie in China. made by a mom and son team. no AI. it made only $100 in the first ten days... and now millions.

music, a deeply human endeavor, surely it raises the spirit, yes? Charlie Parker, Bill Evans, & Stan Getz were gifted musicians & giants of jazz, but their personal lives were decades of broken affairs, abandoned children, heroin addiction... the same with many poets, writers, painters...

"Trump was snuck out of the plane and more than a hundred aides, officials, and reporters were kept onboard without being told there was a credible threat to their lives." they were expendable. wouldn't be surprised if many resign.

Consciousness is the lamp—and also the room it reveals. Meaning begins when we stop mistaking the furniture for ourselves, and ask who arranged it.

Jason Arday, the Cambridge professor accused of plagiarism, offered his letter of resignation. It turns out the letter was generated by AI. If you're going to sin, then sin all the way, baby!

US voters' attitudes on AI: 65% of Democrats want “significant regulation.” 54% of Republicans want “significant regulation.” 53% of independents want “significant regulation.” AI will be a key issue for elections in the US. Note: People are generally pro-AI in the "Global South".

Evelyn Waugh, writing about England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in 1942, "The fog lifts, the world sees us as we are, and worse still, we see ourselves as we are."

the inaccuracy in Nolan's Odyssey isn't a black Helen or the helmets, it's how ideals of oikos, metis, xenia, and nostos were ignored to turn it into a sentimental story of a wounded hero's journey home. read the poem. learn about it.

30 years ago, US cars used to be in many colors, but the trend has been to white/black/gray (74%) the same in clothes. my university students wear black or white. nobody wears solid colors.

it's odd that the fashion industry would settle down to just two colors that aren't really colors. i mention it to students and they look around at each other. they never noticed this. v odd.

ask Perplexity, "why has the US gone monotone in cars, clothing, accessories, and furniture? when did this start?" it's real. it's widespread.

When Jesus talked about AI: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 7:7-8, King James Bible.

"Trump attorney general plots crackdown on ‘birth tourism’ after supreme court ruling" will US Customs test every woman for pregnancy?

have you noticed the name for shark is different in many languages: shark, haifisch, tiburón, requin, squalus, and so on? different cultures encountered sharks relatively recently and in different seas, so there is no common name.

Paul Taylor writes in the LRB (May 7, 2026) a v good description of what it's like to be in long intense concentration. he describes writing software code, but it's the same experience when writing books. I think musicians and artists experience the same.

Weawow: a much better weather app. more features than any other. great design. free and no ads. you can make a donation but he won't bug you for it. find it in app stores.
