A voting system that texts you when your ballot is on its way, and texts you to confirm it’s been counted after you dropoff or mail in. And weeks ahead of the final date. That’s pretty cool, huh? Every state could have such a system, if it really cared to listen.

New books I wanted to read 10/20/2026: The Slantwise Histories by Alix E. Harrow • Tatratea by Alex Woodroe • The Turning of Sally-Mae by Nuzo Onoh • What the Forest Devours by Elaine Vilar Madruga, translated by Kevin Gerry Dunn • When the Night Comes Knocking by Katherine Daniel

I voted yesterday. Every election makes me more grateful about the voting system in this state. Automatic voter registration when getting driver’s license. A voter guide that contains info about candidates (submitted by the candidate) & ballot measures mailed weeks before the deadline.

Ballots mailed weeks before giving you time to learn about the options. Drop boxes or mailbox drop off. Ballot tracking. Unique barcodes. I wish more states had this system or at least more of these options for its voters.

The leaves have blown into the space between doors. Do not let them inside. They will stick to a shoe, drift onto the skin. Soon you will be covered. You will hear the whisper of cool wind, feel dry and brittle, bones crackling as you twirl in a corner, breaking down. A last thought before winter.

New books I want to read 10/13/2026: Off the Reservation by Stephen Graham Jones • Phantom Limb by Brian Evenson • The End of Everything by M. John Harrison • Rottenheart by Kat Dunn • Unspeakable Things by Elizabeth Hand • The Spirits by Bonnie Jo Campbell

Let’s help these two excellent magazines continue bringing out great fiction!

According to Kickstarter tracking service, Kicktraq, the LIGHTSPEED + NIGHTMARE campaign is trending toward only reaching 94% of our goal. So WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP. If you love SF, fantasy, and horror short fiction, please consider backing today and sharing this post. bit.ly/LS-NM-26

What an awesome night of weird fiction readings in Portland by some of my favorite authors Jeff Vandermeer, Keith Rosson, Wendy N. Wagner, Jeremiah Jefferson, and Nathan Carson. Hosted by Brujos Brewing, where some witches always lurk.

Things to do: verify your voting registration. Vote. Talk w everyone you know about getting to polls or completing mail ballot. Write & call your reps demanding trans rights, immigration rights, prosecute corruption, end data centers, end war, stop genocide. Don’t watch the live execution.

We already knew their writing contracts are awful, and it's now clear their art contracts are terrible. I don't think of submitting anything to them… unless they get their act together and treat creatives professionally.

🧵 Attention, Fellow SFF Artists and Authors -- here is my response to Must Read Magazines, after they presented an Asimov's art contract expecting me to waive all Moral Rights and Copyright to my art. And, I would strongly advise the following to my fellow pros…. 1/

It’s always exciting when a new Keith Rosson book comes out. Nobody does horror with doses of crime and humanity better. Can’t wait to dig into the Crone novel. While Broadway Books in Portland is a great shop and host.

Since I saw it early ‘80s, I often think of how in the 1970-movie Colossus: The Forbin Project (& 1966 novel), the supercomputer couldn’t make anyone do anything like build more computers or execute people or launch nukes, until after they built the computer and gave it all the data it demanded.

Finished the smol but mighty novella The Death of Mountains by Jordan Kurella a few weeks ago, and am still thinking about the dueling philosophies, depth of unusual characters, how it is many fables within one story. And then it was awarded a Shirley Jackson Award! Don’t miss this one!

This magazine is always full of great stories and authors that you should be reading. Let’s keep it going!

The world contains many people who believe that if you can’t make complete perfect art in five minutes after the idea then you are a failure. Don’t listen to these people, don’t work for them, make things you love.

A kid up the block practices tee-ball in the yard, and their parent sits on the porch remarking that they’re doing it wrong as the kid repeatedly bats the tee over. But the kid says they right now they really enjoy knocking it down and not having to fetch the ball, and this is, as they say, the way.

Finally finished reading the duology of Fever House and The Devil By Name by Keith Rosson. These are two relentless gruesome unputdownable novels about before and after an apocalypse. They grind at emotions of the characters and readers. Take them for a relentless ride!

Finished reading the amazing novelette And Side By Side They Wander by Molly Tanzer, and loved every word. It’s a joyous read, filled with good things: sprawling science fiction, giant fungi, philosophy, robot romance, a daring heist, weird characters, betrayal, and a deep appreciation of art.
