Bristol-based sports journalist with a passion for birding. Mostly retired now and spending more time on my local Severnside patch, though still prone to twitching on occasion.
I've seen Desert, Eastern-crowned, Green, Two-barred & Pale-legged Leaf Warblers, Taiga Fly, Red-headed Bunting & Song Sparrow at Flamborough/Bempton down the years. But for me, this week's Rufous-tailed Robin tops the lot! This cracking image by @birdphotos007.bsky.social#ukbirding

A blog about Rufous-tailed Robin, Radde's Warbler, Isabelline Wheatear and a Red-tailed/Isabelline Shrike and how small differences can have big impacts on a day of rare birds. #ukbirding#birds
So this was what all the fuss was about. After 13 hours across 2 days and 7 views (3 prolonged & excellent) I'm finally satisfied, if a touch crumpled! Good to see @dawnbirder.bsky.social - so glad you connected. This superb Rufous-tailed Robin image was captured by Mike Edgcumbe #ukbirding

Back at Flamborough South Landing for seconds of the Rufous-tailed Robin today. Patience rewarded with excellent, albeit brief, views of this mega vagrant. Unless you're eight feet tall, you might want to consider bringing a step ladder! Robin image courtesy of Graham Jepsom. #ukbirding

Escaped the mayhem that is East Yorkshire birding right now, to return to the relative quiet of Norfolk. I just love the sight and sound of Pink-footed Geese as they head inland to feed on arable early in the morning #ukbirding
Cracking vismig at Spurn this morning. Caspian Gull south, Short-eared Owl, Hawfinch, Woodcock, Snow Bunting and Merlin in-off and White-fronted and Tundra Bean Geese on the move. Good to bump into @hobbylovinglife.bsky.social and @worlebirder.bsky.social from back home #ukbirding
My decision to base myself on the east coast this week paid off big-time when Flamborough produced a Rufous-tailed Robin. Fast drive from Spurn and a brief view of a tough-to-see mega ensued. The confiding Kilnsea Bluethroat (below) showed so much better this morning! Pic: Pete Sutton #ukbirding
A day that began with a Desert Wheatear at Wells-next-the-Sea, concluded with this stunning Isabelline Wheatear at Winterton Dunes. In between, I managed a self-found Richard's Pipit, juv Rosy Starling, a trio of Shorelark and a couple of flighty Snow Bunting #ukbirding

Good start to my east coast trip - female Desert Wheatear still by the RNLI station at Wells-next-the-Sea this morning. It came out of roost and performed well at first light before moving west along the beach to commence feeding #ukbirding
A more or less annual feature of sea watches off the Somerset coast, Sabine's Gulls on land remain a scarcity in the county. I diverted on my way back to Bristol from Cornwall to observe this confiding juvenile at Wall Common, Steart. Good to catch up with @julianthomas19.bsky.social#ukbirding

I was pleasantly surprised to find a Willow Tit at a former breeding site in east Cornwall following a run of several years with zero encounters. This is an increasingly scarce species away from the traditional South West stronghold of the Tamar Lakes #ukbirding#cornwallbirding

On this day last year - Scilly for a magnificent St Agnes quartet of Mourning Dove, American Pipit, Spotted Sandpiper and Hoopoe with good friends. One of the best days of my 2025 'Big Year' #ukbirding
Accorded celebrity status during it's 6-day stay, the Pendeen Lapland Bunting must have been the most visited individual of it's ilk anywhere in the British Isles during early October. An extremely confiding individual, It put on quite a show for ardent Longspur devotees #ukbirding#birdingCornwall

Have seen most of the Shetland specialities in England: Great Snipe (Sandwell Valley 95), Pechora Pipit (St Leven 96), Lancy (Landguard 97), Rubythroat (Osmington Mills 97) PG Tips (Blakeney Point 02) & Yellow-breasted Bunting (Portland Bill 03). Anyone else done something similar? #ukbirding

Touch of quality in the far West this week. Spotted Sandpiper (Pic: @runnelstone.bsky.social), Wilson's Snipe (Pic: @migrationmatt.bsky.social), Yellow-browed Warbler and Lapland Bunting seen in Cornwall/Scilly. Planning to return to the 'Magic Isles' for more rares next week #ukbirding

What could be my final voyage on Scillonian III proved an exhilarating experience with superb views of Minke Whale, Risso's & Common Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise, Cory's Shearwaters, Grey Phal, Bonxie & Euro Stormie. I'll miss this old boat when it retires next month. So many fond memories #ukbirding
Is there a 'war on the countryside'? Yes - but it's the one being waged by the landowners who unleash 50 million pheasants each year...
Step forward 'Lord' Christian Brighty to explain, in this devastating (and hilarious) video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFi8...
The last 4 days I spent 8 hours at Lower Moors #Scilly trying to photo the key features of Wilson's Snipe without it once spreading its tail or wings! So relieved that someone else managed it. A very striking monochromatic bird that convinced straight away. ID notes in alt #ukbirding#birds

It's identity confirmed from photographs only this morning, the Scilly Wilson's Snipe performed admirably from a cramped hide at Lower Moors. I even managed a brief view of the underwing! My second seen in the UK (three decades after my first), both encountered on St Mary's #ukbirding

James is a tremendous young man. Love his enthusiasm but above all his communication skills for a young person are excellent. A super advert for the potential we can produce.
I love the unbridled enthusiasm demonstrated by young birders just starting out and eager to learn. I was energised by a day out in Dorset and Wiltshire with @kidphotographer24.bsky.social, who enjoyed his first encounters with Spotted Crake, Woodlark and Stone Curlew #ukbirding
The probable Todd's Canada Goose I found at Slimbridge WWT last week may have been open to debate, but there was no doubting the Night Heron that flew by uttering it's gutteral call at Ham Wall 2 days later. A quartet of Glossy Ibis showed particularly well from Avalon hide #ukbirding

A Brilliant day birding with @andy-1963.bsky.social! Started early at Lodmoor RSPB and had the Spotted Crake✅️! Plus Water Rail, Bearded tits and marsh harrier! Then to Morden bog where we had singing woodlark✅️! And Dartford Warblers! Last we stopped at RSBP Winterboune to see Stone Curlew, another✅️
Spotted Crake at Lodmoor! A lifer!!! Photos don't do the bird justice! We had amazing views!
A big thanks to @andy-1963.bsky.social for the lift and great day out!
September has served up some tasty Autumnal scarcities, including Pallid Harrier, Semipalmated, Bairds, Buff-breasted & Pectoral Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, multiple Grey Phalaropes and a Wryneck. I wonder what goodies October will bring . . . #ukbirding
