All depends on the motivation of Labour (and ex-) voters. If Burnham supporters don't want to undermine his new position, they will vote Labour. If they want to influence him to a wealth tax to restore services and infrastructure then they will vote Green. Starmer supporters may not vote. Binface?😆
More than one in four *residents* is a student. Most of the students can't vote! (because they're international students)
Same could be said of difficulties for the SNP and Scottish flag. I may put up both England and Scotland flags as I wish both to do well. Let people make of that what they will...
'The World Cup is a difficult time for far-right activists,' writes Robert Shrimsley, 'since people will be putting up England flags without wishing to deport immigrants. Terribly confusing.' Tap here to read his latest column: ft.trib.al/nc0GofR
For use with Large Language Models. i.e. Machine Learning general purpose AIs.
AI used in specific tasks, pattern recognition e.g. medical diagnosis, and overseen by human experts performs impressively. AI used in general tasks with no informed oversight performs poorly. The greatest danger AI poses is people believing it. Need better approach. Ideas attached based on Asimov.
The only reasons that Blair has put his head over the parapet: 1. Scared that Labour might move to the left. Must stop that. 2. Seen the way the wind is blowing and if 1 cannot be achieved, disconnecting from Starmer and hoping for consultancy and influence with new government.
Tony Blair says Labour must abandon net zero, support Trump and move firmly to the right
This is why Streeting would be a bad alternative to Starmer. Has the same profile and problems. It would be no change. No policy difference or approach difference.
NHS staff increasingly believe Wes Streeting is doing a bad job as health secretary and that the Labour government is handling the NHS badly Streeting as health secretary Good job: 22% (-3 from 19-28 Feb 2025) Bad job: 53% (+13) Labour handling of NHS Well: 24% (-6) Badly: 66% (+13)
I'll wager that those five constituencies combined also avoided more inheritance tax (through offshore funds, etc.) than Scotland and Wales as well. And they spent more on specialist accountancy fees.
Just five constituencies in London paid more inheritance tax combined than the whole of Scotland and Wales put together. ft.trib.al/5UmfKSp
Two options as I see it. 1. Starmer finally really does "get it" and includes big policies in the speech - Big new NHS services, big new railway, water, power network. Paid for by wealth taxes. 2. Charlie simply says "My government will continue so you may sit in session." (short and sweet)
Tomorrow, the King will be delivering his speech as part of the State Opening of Parliament - the formal beginning of each new session of parliament. Find out why it is so important, and how the speech is debated and voted on, in our explainer: www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/ki...
That speech is not enough by itself. Better, but still "small change". No mention of paying for change beyond incremental. Plenty of money out there, go tax those who wouldn't miss some (includes me and proud to pay more). King's speech Wednesday now last chance.
Starmer vows he will not ‘walk away’ as leadership rivals circle ft.trib.al/9EdqhcJ
There is only so many times you should turn equipment off and then on again before you come to the conclusion that it is just knackered and needs replacing. Starmer Reset
Another reset speech by Starmer on Monday. Doesn’t he and his spads realise that a man with nothing to steer his political leadership can read pre-written speeches as many times as he wants, but without courage or conviction the speech disappears into the ether……Until the next time!
Likely sequence: Starmer to McSweeney: "Make sure Peter gets the clearance he needs" (meaning "Check him out" or...?) McSweeney to Robbins: "Ensure Peter is cleared no matter what" (meaning "fix it") "and just tell us the result, keep the detail to yourself." Stinks of plausible deniability.

Protection money. "That's a nice boat you have there. Pity if something were to happen to it." Showing mafia boss Trump how to do it.
Iran is considering a proposal to levy transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a lawmaker said on Thursday, a potential bid to monetise Tehran's newfound grip over the critical waterway.-Reuters
Lots of programmes recently on empire. If you want an entertaining (but still informative) option, I recommend Al Murray: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...
I very much enjoyed this lecture on the stories of two missionaries - delving into the complexity of the relationships between evangelising missions and colonial power. Nuanced and thoughtful with a great Q&A. I can see why those who only want to celebrate empire hate this so much!
The first AI wars? Targetting by AI. What next? Deciding which country to declare war on?
1/ As the US continues AI-enabled strikes on Iran, new @brennancenter.org research from @emileayoub.bsky.social and me examines how the military’s investments in the technology have been building to this moment. Congress must step up and reckon with AI’s dangers to life, liberty, and democracy 🧵:
At least it it has reached some of the main press. Make Armageddon Great Again. These nutcases sometimes talk of Islam as a "death cult", but their Rapturism is the ultimate death cult. I respond by offering Ragnarok.
US troops were told war on Iran was ‘all part of God’s divine plan’, watchdog alleges
Sheer insanity. I have often observed that there is a section of the evangelical right in the US that thinks this, but I didn't suspect that it also infested the leadership and military. newrepublic.com/post/207270/...
Of course there will be a strong response. Israel was expecting Hezbollah to get involved. It makes an excuse for another incursion into Lebanon. They now have troops available freed up from Gaza. This time they will keep it. "Greater Israel"
There will be "a strong response to Hezbollah's shooting" following sirens in Haifa. -Channel 12 Israel
Definition of "Elite": Any group of people who are better than you at something and who disagree with you about a topic you feel strongly about. Elites: Academic - too clever, no common sense Financial - too rich Sports - far too fit Political - another party that gets more votes etc., etc.

Did Ratcliffe "colonise" Monaco? Is that wrong? So when is he coming home?
I wrote for the Guardian about why Jim Ratcliffe's talk of Britain being "colonised" by immigrants crosses the line between legitimate debate and inflammatory rhetoric. It fuses echoes of Powellism with great replacement conspiracies of "civilisational erasure" www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
How are comedians supposed to add humour to the news when the news is already funnier than anything? Trump Greenland Penguins
I've done My Week: Donald Trump (again) for tomorrow. My first draft genuinely had a joke about Trump thinking there were penguins in Greenland but I took it out because it seemed too stupid.
The deal will set up a new framework for the whole area around Greenland. It will be called the Arctic Resources Strategic Engagement. It will be led by the USA and Trump appointed to run it. Yes, he will be the Chief ARSE.
Trump declaration of Greenland framework deal met with scepticism as doubts persist
Until recently there has been a debate in America over whether Trump should be impeached for being "the most openly corrupt President" and breaches of US law. Now there is no debate, of course he should be impeached. The new debate is whether he should also be sectioned.
Kremlin says Putin has been invited to join Trump’s Gaza ‘board of peace’
Elbit get the elbow. This needs more main news coverage. The hunger strikers didn't give in, they won a victory.
🚨BREAKING: Prisoners END their 73-DAY hunger strike after huge WIN. The government BLOCKED a £2bn contract to train British troops with the UK wing of Israel’s BIGGEST weapons company - a key demand for the activists.
I don't think most Iranians want that. This is far more than a choice between a theocracy and a monarchy. That would be a false dichotomy. Iran deserves democracy.
Nearly 50 years after the 1979 Islamic Revolution overthrew his father, exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi has spurred demonstrators onto the streets in a massive escalation of the protests sweeping Iran.
Is this just geographical or is it a long term memory of the old Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria, Mercia and Wessex? @profaliceroberts.bsky.social
Where do the North and South of England begin? Based on the answers of 46,000 English people about where they live, the southern border of “the North” is a line roughly from Shrewsbury to Grimsby, while the northern border of “the South” is a line roughly from the Severn to Great Yarmouth
Put uniformed, armed thugs into a City to harass its population. Get protests and civil disobedience in response. A pressure cooker. What do you expect to happen? Another step towards the civil war that Trump wants, so that he can declare martial law and cancel elections. i.e. this is intentional.
