More amazing sea spider video here from @schmidtocean.bsky.social shared by @tuexplorer1.bsky.social! Holding something....maybe a male holding on to its eggs? Most species of pycno demonstrate paternal care of egg masses. 🧪🌎🦑🌊

Relicanthus plus I think that's a pycnogonid down beside the base holding something? @andyantarctica.bsky.social @schmidtocean.bsky.social dive 973 part 2 #samplinggap #MarineLife

@andyantarctica.bsky.social check out that Pycnogonid. Hard to tell much from this angle but it looks a little different than the big red ones. @schmidtocean.bsky.social dive 971 #samplinggap #MarineLife

Sea spiders (species dependent) feed on soft bodied creatures....likely this Colossendeidae is looking for a snack of coral polyps! 🧪🌎🦑🌊 AMAZING video of these adorable creatures! Thanks for sharing @tuexplorer1.bsky.social

I've kept some of these (different species, same Family) in tanks in Antarctica and NEVER seen them move that fast nor seen them drop legs like this! 🧪🌎🦑 thanks @tuexplorer1.bsky.social for sharing this!

Lisa@tuexplorer1.bsky.social

OK here we go. I thought they eventually collected the entire animal but they just managed to collect the legs that got pulled off. The body went out of frame when the legs dropped but you can still see them grabbing legs & then spider gone, legs in claw.

Colossendeidae! SPECTACULAR creature. 🧪🌎🦑🌊🇦🇶

The bighead and silver (aka Asian) carp have been swimming north into Lake MI for years....this was an effort to help protect the $multi-BILLION tourism, fishing, etc. industries in the region. This is VERY bad for not only MI but all Great lakes states and Canada. 🧪🦑🌎🧬

Interesting move: New attention on NSF Office of Polar Programs in the Senate: a bipartisan proposal to make OPP a permanent directorate within the NSF. Meet one of the rarest sea spiders I've encountered. Dodecolopoda mawsoni. A member of the Colossendeidae, it has 12, yes A DOZEN, walking legs. In my collections of literally thousands of pycnos in Antarctica, I've only found this amazing creature once....genomic data forthcoming! 🧪🌎🦑🇦🇶🌊 (1/2)

the first photo of D. mawsoni, taken on NBP23-03 on our research cruise in East Antarctica, was taken with the YoYo camera thanks to the amazing electronic technicians and marine techs on our ship. 🧪🌎🌊🇦🇶

Yet again life is better with sea spiders!!! 🧪🌎🦑🇦🇶

What is most concerning is what this move says about American scientific leadership. These structures were designed to be slow, deliberate and difficult to politicize. They are proving much easier to dismantle than they were to build.
