Get this PDF while you still can (until October 23). If you're interested in consciousness science, his 2025 article, the 50 commentaries (many of them by luminaries in the field) and his reply (all included in the PDF) are super worth your time!

Reminder - the open access deal on this BBS collection is only for one more week (until 23/10/26) - don't miss your chance to get hold of the full pdf 👇🏽

Many congratulations to Suki Chan - longlisted by BIFA for 'best debut director, feature documentary' for 2026. Her film, Conscious, is premiering in Switzerland (Basel, Oct 24) and Italy (Milan, Oct 29) very soon! If you can get there, get there. Details here: theconsciousfilm.com/watch.html

1/ Conscious AI and Biological Naturalism. A long time in the making, but the full collection is *out now* in Behavioural and Brain Sciences I deeply thank all my many commentators for their wise, broad, and deep opinions on this critical topic.I also thank them for their saintly patience. 🙏🏽

2/ I remain highly skeptical about the prospects for conscious AI (for silicon digital systems), but I've learned an enormous amount from the privilege of engaging with these commentaries. Hands down one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life.

3/ My hope is that - whether you agree with me or not - having such a diversity of views collected in one place will serve a useful resource for discussions about consciousness and AI.

Wow this has been an exhausting week. After lots of talking with the media, I'm really feeling how much effort it takes to push through and keep the focus on the real harms when everyone is running around shouting "The skynet is falling!" or, reporter version, "Experts say the skynet is falling!" >>

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

Between the PRs of (largely likely stolen) math breakthroughs, claims of "rogue AI" (actually cybercrimes by companies, but whatevs), and doomerist "whistleblowers", it feels like we've been subjected to a gish gallop of hype recently. >>

5/6 @nitafarahany.bsky.social and I will be addressing some of these questions in a forthcoming commentary - where we'll also offer an ethically-informed roadmap to guide this important research as it progresses. In this context, "pacing the frontier" really does make sense 😉

3/6 This study is a milestone in synthetic biology and chimera research. It has the potential to generate many medical breakthroughs by providing an enhanced biological model of human brain tissue that allows behavioural as well as neural and genetic assays.

4/6 The Stanford team have been thorough and proactive in addressing ethical concerns that comes from this frontier work. But their pioneering work nonetheless raises many open questions: are the xenocortical mice conscious? Do they have any human-like properties of consciousness or cognition?

George Butler spoke immediately after me at this year's @ted.com conference. His talk was a moving account of how drawing in conflict zones can convey the emotions & stories that news alone cannot. I'm glad he followed me & not the other way: he brought the house down. www.ted.com/talks/george...

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

This review did so much to help Being You on its way, back in 2021. So I’ll take this chance to repost it now why not 🙏🏽👇🏽

A good rule of thumb: If the press release (or stenographic news reporting masquerading as journalism) says that an "AI" did something, that's deliberate obfuscation. Software doesn't do anything of its own accord, but folks sure like to talk about it as if it does: >>

Great to see this new piece in @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social by the @mesec-community.bsky.social. I had the privilege of being the academic chair of one their meetings earlier this year and it was a wonderfully uplifting experience. MESEC is a great model for community-organised science. 👇

How can students and postdocs shape their field of research? We're excited to share our TiCS piece, showcasing MESEC as a case study for exactly this question! So grateful for our wonderful community of MESECeers 🤗 doi.org/10.1016/j.ti... *Free access* link: authors.elsevier.com/a/1njPQ4sIRv...
