(2) It's Nazi's vs elves and other fantasy creatures. It's also poorly edited, badly paced and juvenile in parts. Still, the endless changes in animation and techniques used is revolutionary, psychedelic and brave. It is good? Maybe? Is it interesting? Absolutely.

Recommending an animated film a day for a full year, day 202. Today is my 141st favourite: An American Tail. "On Gaku: Our Sound" is for people with very dry humour. The rotoscoped animation is subtly inventive (especially the musical sections), and the story of why DIY matters is timely. Love it.

Recommending an animated film a day for a full year, day 201. Today is my 122nd favourite: An American Tail. The epic Don Bluth movie about a little mouse immigrating from Russia to America is one of of his best. The animation is superb and no one could claim it lacks ambition…

(2) … but I still think it could have used some room to breathe. It rushed through parts trying to cram so much in, and I feel a longer movie or a more concentrated one would have worked better. It’s fabulous, but clunky.

(2) It's a really thoughtful examination of the period and being both an woman artist during it. It does have some melodrama, but it is earned. The episodic nature may rub people the wrong way, but I see them all examining the nature of art and womanhood through different lenses. A mature triumph.

If Wildwood bombs, we deserve whatever AI slop comes our way. We can no longer say what we want are original, passionate , human made films. I think the most hopeful outcome is it makes 20 - 25 million this weekend, but keeps building off strong word of mouth (like Elemental).

Recommending an animated film a day for a full year, day BONUS DAY. I saw Wildwood. Time will tell if it is my favourite Laika film, (Coraline is Stiff competition), but it is certainly the most ambitious. I am still reeling from the epic nature and the breadth of this film...

(2) ... the nuances of character and acting is stunning, and the action scenes are thrilling (maybe scary for little ones. It earns its Pg-13). My be recency bias (I JUST saw it), but it would likely be in my top 25 animated films of all time if I ranked it today. Don't regret not seeing this.

A very good discussion on the career of Sayo Yamamoto, who has been MIA for years now despite directing some of the most interesting and unique anime this century. Did she retire, or was she forced out? Hopefully she’s just laying low. Either way all her work is indispensable.

Now that Coop has finally watched Yuri!!! on Ice, they and Sylvia dive into Sayo Yamamoto 's series.

I was really concerned at the mid point (the kid is so annoying), but the second half is much better than the first and the final 2 episodes are firecrackers. Very different than the first season, which I appreciated despite the unevenness .

Recommending an animated film a day for a full year, day 199. Today is my 125th favourite: The Secret of Kells. The first Cartoon Saloon would set the template of ornate, stunningly designed animation that celebrates folklore and storytelling. One of the caricatures was unfortunate in hindsight...

Recommending an animated film a day for a full year, day 198. Today is my 127th favourite: Howls Moving Castle. It had some of my favourite Miyazaki fantasy elements ever and when it is about family it really works. I get why so many people love it and consider it Ghibli‘s best…

(2)… but for me it turns into such a convoluted mess in the third act in tone and plot, I can’t ignore what doesn’t work, despite all that does. It’s like you mixed up two lovely puzzles in the same box.

Recommending an animated film a day for a full year, day 197. Today is my 21st favourite: Wolf Children. Hosada loves movies about family and this is his best one. An ode to a single Mom, and the need to recognize independence in your kids. My only slight complaint is that the sections…

Watching the next animated movie in my Tubi algorithm, part one. Tubi suggested Mystery Of Mamo. The first Lupin movie. I'd only seen parts of it before. For the most part I find Lupin has a pretty high floor. The premise it too fun to mess up too much. There's a gentleman thief, a gunslinger,...

(2) ... a samurai, a cop always chasing him, and a sexy action heroine. How do you screw that up? Well, this one is my least favorite Lupin I've ever seen. The animation is obviously done quickly and cheaply, the treatment of Fujiko (often a low point of this series) is extra gross, and it is...

(3) ... just boring for long stretches of it. Sometimes it comes alive for some fun segments like the truck chase or Goemon vs a helicopter, but this is a low point in Lupin's history. The music is fantastic though. D-

(2) … and rewatching it today it feels like there are better versions of this humour (like Mike Judges own King of the Hill, or many adult swim shows). The two burnouts of the show I knew their type growing up, and to me it’s more fun to see them represented in short bursts.

Day 195 recommending an animated film for a full year. Today is my choice for 16th best animated film: Fantastic Planet. This was also my number one choice on my list of Best Psychedelic animated movie. Humans are animals in this hallucinatory film, some hide as tribes and some become pets…

(2)… we get many trippy scenes of the aliens and their rituals, sometimes there to show off the imaginative drawings. It looks singular too, often resembling paper cut animation.

Day 194 recommending an animated film for a full year. Today is my choice for 9th best animated film: Grave of the Fireflies. Isao Takahata might have said this is not an anti war movie, and it is not a battle movie, but it is still one of the most powerful anti was movies ever...

(2) ... Telling the tale of two children orphaned by war in an honest and devastating way. It drives me crazy when people diminish it as misery porn, as it clearly has a lot more to say about pride and community. It concentrates on these two children, and in doing so hives voice to the true...

(3) ... victims. Finally, some have argued that this is somehow erasing the horrors of the Japanese empire at this time (a ridiculous argument also levied against The Wind Rises), and I have to wonder what movie these people are watching. It is against blind patriotism. A masterpiece.

(2) ...with the story of a man and his dog, but this defies expectations, being far more about him trying to breed the dog and a lot of content about dog feces. There is too much narration but at least it is done by Christopher Plumber. The animation is sketchy and expressive. Worth a watch.

Animation Dad reposted

The Cartoon Network leak revealed that the team actually wrote fake interviews for the Powerpuff Girls in-house so that the writers could understand them better and honestly this is incredibly useful for learning how to characterize your characters holy shit

(2) and the need to recognize everybody's humanity. As both refugees and lgbtq+ people are demonized by factors in our society, this movie feels more pressing than ever. It is extremely powerful and personal.

Fact is we don’t deserve original movies. People say they want them but don’t go see them. Enjoy Doomsday I guess.

LAIKA’s ‘Wildwood’ is tracking for a domestic opening weekend of just $6M–$10M, Box Office Pro reports. • Estimated budget of $100M • Would mark one of the lowest openings for an animated film in 2026

Day 190 recommending an animated film for a full year. Today is my 180th favourite : Ernest and Celestine. It’s in the same delightful children’s film company in f Winnie the Pooh, or Paddington. Kids will love the warm vibes and adults will be chaaaaarmed by it. The sequel is even better.

Day 189 recommending an animated film for a full year. Today is my 17th favourite :Ghost in the Shell. A movie I appreciate more now than I have in the past. It has aged better than Akira (and been more sadly relevant). The animation obviously holds up, but so does the story. When I did my...

(2) ... list of best animated animated movies this one was at the top. The new anime from last year is also a new classic (as is Stand Alone Society), but Oshii's vision is equally masterful. I mean, it's Ghost in the Shell!

(2) … I love GKIDs and can’t imagine I would even hear of this movie if not for them, but when 2 of their best movies are so hard to find (also Chicken for Linda), and still rentable but not streamable it can be frustrating. Search this delight out. It’s worth it.

Day 187 recommending an animated film for a full year. Today is my 272nd favourite "The Cat Returns". A strangely unambitious Ghibli film that easily clears its goals to be entertaining and little else. Good humour. Your kids will like it. People into debonair cats will love it. Also, Muta rules.

(2)...this politically charged movie captures oppressiveness and anxiousness throughout it's entire runtime. The story of an abusive cult in Chile is unsettling and has horrific imagery, but I would not expect a traditional horror film. Just one that gets under your skin if you let it.

Day 185 recommending an animated film for a full year. Today is my 134th favourite "The Sea Beast”. Despite being the most watched Netflix animated film at the time I feel this charmer had been largely forgotten...

Day 184 recommending an animated film for a full year. Today is my 9th favorite "The Incredibles”. A film so much a part of our culture that it is taken for granted. As a fan of the Fantastic Four comics growing up still the best distillation of what that comic was about. Actually thrilling...

(2) …Actually a kids film where you feel danger. Proof that animation is the natural home for Superheroes if you give them the care, love of the tropes, and characters.
