I struggle to look at these pictures because of the pain of losing Tim. But it’s important to talk about him. I’m giving a talk next Friday at the virtual Cycle Touring Festival about the ride we did in Tim’s memory last summer. Please tune in 🩵

I ran Ealing half marathon today dressed as a plane to protest against the race being sponsored by Wizz Air. Airlines shouldn’t be sponsoring running events. They really are taking the wizz. (As opposed to these guys, who are taking a wizz)

We took a bike tour of the city earlier, before we catch the sleeper train later. The roads in central Ljubljana were closed to traffic in 2004, making a wonderfully calm and cycleable city. The fountain in the second picture used to be a roundabout.

On our last day in Slovenia we headed out to the coast, to the tiny town of Piran. Slovenia’s coastline is so small that if you look one way, there’s Croatia, and the other way it’s Italy. There are no sand beaches but you can climb off the rocks into the sea, which is warm and clear 🌊

Slovenia is just lovely. Ljubljana was Tim’s favourite city and I can see why. It’s interesting, attractive and has a small friendly feel. I think of Tim often, especially here, and hope that many of you think of him often too.

Now we are on a tiny little train winding its way through the mountains towards Bled. Lots of hilltop towns and a deep river gorge, and lots and lots of trees - not surprising for the most densely wooded country in central Europe.

We’ve only spent one day here so far (which was spent wandering around like zombies on account of not sleeping much on the train). Yesterday we took a Flixbus out to the coast, hopping over the border to Trieste 🇮🇹 It’s an interesting city! A bit Italian, a bit Slavic. Lots of boats!!

Yep, it would have been quicker to fly (and a better night’s sleep). But I quit flying 20 yrs ago because of the emissions, and I truly believe that burning loads of fossil fuel isn’t worth it just so I can go on holiday. Especially if I can get there by train! And we have arrived in Ljubljana! Four trains and 24hrs from the UK to Slovenia. It all went pretty smoothly, with just one cancelled train but everything else working like clockwork. It’s never the best night’s sleep on a train but we are here and excited to explore 🇸🇮

Step two: Brussels to Frankfurt, on this train. I’m a bit nervous about taking two ICE (German railways) trains back to back as they have a terrible reputation for being late/disrupted! But they are slick & comfy & clean & spacious which is nice. Already running 5 mins late though…

Step one of our holiday, Ljubljana by train! 🤩 In 24 hrs we will (hopefully) be arriving in the Slovenian capital. Three trains and a sleeper train between now and then… Fingers crossed it all runs smoothly! 🤞🇸🇮

Oops I said marathon when it's a half. Sorry for the mis-selling! 🫣 I'll just get to the end and turn around and do it again...

I'm running the Bournemouth marathon in October in aid of my charity Flight Free UK. Would love your support if you fancy throwing me a few quid! www.justgiving.com/fundraising/...

"One of the things I love about running is how simple it is. Just head out of the door and go where your legs take you. There’s very little kit needed, and importantly for a sustainability professional like me, there’s very little impact on the planet." My flight-free parkrun alphabet story 👇🏃‍♀️

25 parkruns, one for every letter of the alphabet (but without X as there isn't one), all without flying or driving: www.annacycles.co.uk/post/flight-...

Does anyone have a pair of solar glasses they are now not going to use? I’m going to head down to Gibraltar to see the next eclipse next year, and want to save a few of those pairs from landfill. Flight-free Gibraltar = trains to Paris, Barcelona, Madrid and Algeciras 🙌

Can't wait for this event next week: 12 adventurers sharing their travel stories, all without flying, including yours truly and the amazing Alastair Humphreys. In aid of my charity Flight Free UK. Please come if you can! We're streaming it online if you can't get to London. Tickets 👇

Jane Austen’s sister and mother were called Cassandra. The Great Exhibition was held in Hyde Park in 1851.

My Mensa member boyfriend did the Mensa mag quiz on me and was ASTOUNDED I knew the answers to these two questions (his strength is more numbers and logic, but still…): Anyone? What was the name of Jane Austen’s sister and mother? What happened in Hyde Park in 1851? (Is this niche knowledge?!)

It’s writing day on Slow Gin and the fire’s going strong. And a story’s just popped up on my feed about how bad wood burners are and how they will soon have health warnings attached. This makes me feel guilty. In every other aspect of my life I try to keep my impact low:

Maybe there is no right answer. We each do what we can within the areas we can control. I think the payoff of having a tiny footprint on a boat probably evens it all out. But I do think, if wood burners demand so much attention, shouldn’t aviation?

Heathrow airport is the UK’s single biggest polluter. London is the most exposed city in the world to air pollution from aviation. So as well as putting health warnings on wood burners, how about we also put health warnings on airline tickets?

solar panel for electricity, composting toilet, clothes from charity shops, vegan, no car, no flights. So I could say “I do so much else, let me have my wood burner.” I’m not sure that’s helpful though, especially as lots of people use that to justify their flights, which I struggle with!

But there are pretty good reasons for me to have it: > It’s the only method I have of heating my home > I use properly seasoned wood > I am often moored in the countryside away from other people > This model has the highest rating of efficiency > I always put on another jumper before another log

Now it's running on behalf of my charity, @flightfreeuk.bsky.social. Alastair Humphreys is still the host. There will still be 12 intrepid explorers. The format is still PechaKucha. The difference is it's all flight-free! In London or watch online. Pls come! www.tickettailor.com/events/fligh...

I'm so excited about this event! You might remember the Night of Adventure, the legendary charity fundraiser where 12 intrepid explorers had just 6mins 40secs to share their story. Well it's back, as a flight-free version 👉 www.tickettailor.com/events/fligh... (This is me speaking at a prev event)
