🐝Desmaria mutabilis, the most evolutionarily distinct species, showed the greatest floral divergence from the three Tristerix species. Its different flowering season & greater number of insect visits compared with hummingbird visits may help explain this distinct floral morphology

🌎 Overall, floral differences followed a pattern consistent with the evolutionary history of these mistletoes, whose diversification was shaped by the Andean orogeny. (7/7) 👉 doi.org/rttj #PlantEvolution #AoBpapers #FloralEvolution #PollinationBiology #Mistletoes

🔬 Floral traits differed among species, and a statistical model correctly classified 82.1% of individuals. Ovary length was the most informative trait for distinguishing species, while herkogamy helped separate Desmaria from Tristerix. (4/7)

🐦 Tristerix aphyllus and T. corymbosus are closely related sister species with striking ecological differences, yet their flowers are very similar. Both share the same hummingbird pollinator, suggesting the retention of ancestral floral traits rather than independent convergence

🌺 How does evolutionary history shape floral diversity? This new study investigates floral trait divergence in four southern South American mistletoes, revealing how evolutionary relationships and pollination biology may influence flower evolution. (2/7)

🌿 The study compares five floral traits across four species: Tristerix aphyllus, T. corymbosus, T. verticillatus and Desmaria mutabilis, representing three evolutionary divergences spanning the Eocene to the Pleistocene. (3/7)

🔥 Fire and other disturbances play important roles in tropical grassy ecosystems. Understanding how plants and communities respond to changing fire regimes, climate and land use is essential for predicting their resilience. (5/8)

🛰️ Future progress will require integrating -omics, functional and evolutionary approaches with long-term monitoring, remote sensing and predictive modelling to better understand plant responses to environmental change. (6/8)

🌱 The Cerrado, the largest savanna-dominated region in the Neotropics, exemplifies both the exceptional biodiversity of tropical grassy ecosystems and their vulnerability to environmental change. (3/8)

🔬 How do plants evolve and respond to their environments? Recent research is advancing our understanding of plant traits, physiology, evolution and interactions with animals, and how these processes shape plant communities and ecosystem functioning. (4/8)

🌾 Tropical grasslands and savannas are ancient, highly diverse ecosystems that support essential ecological processes, ecosystem services and human livelihoods. Yet agricultural expansion, altered fire regimes, invasive species and climate change increasingly threaten them.2/8
