I'm relieved to find out today that neither Conway's Game of Life or Conway's Law were invented by Lynn Conway. She did a third unrelated important computer science thing. I have been quietly worried for some time that I was deadnaming her by mistake.

tired: naming and cache invalidation are two of the hardest problems in computer science inspired: If I change my name to Conway it might increase the likelihood that I come up with something that's critical to computer science in 30 years

Every time I see a quilt at like, the county fair, the library, wherever quilts are exhibited, I think to myself "maybe I should get really into quilting" I have noticed myself having this same reflex about amateur radio. I know nothing of it but, what if I got really into it?

watching French-language media with English subtitles is not my preference for effective practice but they are burned into the show I just tried on Gem :/ it's annoying! cannot imagine how much more annoying it is for francophones!

anne.loves.technologyIf I were in charge of the (known) world these would be my royal whimsAt the event we went to yesterday, we talked a little bit about my persistent joke/delusion that I will be “in my prime” with my skill on the rapier field in about 5-10 years, and that the Crown Tournament fought by Rapier will also make it to other SCA kingdoms in 5-10 years (“just in time!”). I’ve had this opinion for 3-5 years and it remains 5-10 years in the future despite the passage of time. Were it an option now, I would absolutely enter a crown tournament by rapier (regardless of my likelihood of winning), for the pageantry and fun of it / because I don’t think it would be as fun to reign without my wife and neither of us are armored combatants. The opinion that I think would make me the most enemies, which I would have more levers of change accessible towards enacting were I to be crown, is that SCA Crown should be an in-game designation only. The job is to look pretty and give people awards; the job should not be to adjudicate actual IRL disputes, serve as a stopgap for harassment complaints or legal issues, have actual power of most kinds, etc. Regardless of whether I am crown at any point in my life, this interest in nonprofit governance will shape the rooms I’m present in. But, that’s not a very fun royal whim. Royal whims are ideally at least a little fun I think? Aífe says that her royal whim would be: a preference for live music / no recorded music at events. She loves early music and is very willing to hand out instruments to make this happen. The number of medieval instruments per square foot of our apartment proves this out. She has been learning to write counterpoint the past few months! I have decided that my royal whim would be: I do not like it when people say “learn to parry” on the rapier field. This is often said about double kills in tournaments. It is not actionable (what exactly is the means by which parrying is learned?) and, while it may be intended to be self-deprecating, often our newest fighters are the ones being deprecated. If you do slip up in my presence and say it out of habit, I would request that before the end of that event, your penance is that you must _teach_ someone how to parry (or otherwise counter) some action that you like to take on the rapier field. What would your whims be, if you could wave a wand for it? Is the concept of a royal whim fundamentally incompatible with my wish for crown to not have as much power? If you are a royal peer, would this even work?

10 pages into Fall by Neal Stephenson: hmm maybe he's lost the plot on what I personally want from his writing I'm currently like 200-300 ish pages in and actually this is in several ways tailor made to my interests??

Cryptonomicon is still my favorite of his and was for a long while my favorite book, period. So I'm broadly here for the 2019 remix of the same themes is I guess what I'm saying

me in 2016, receiving a red stapler from my employer upon reaching a 1-yr anniversary* me in 2026, stapling several pages together with it for the first time in years * yes I have seen Office Space. No that doesn't make it appropriate as a gift

excited to report that my merino wool shrunk by only 3" across the entire fabric width (about 55-60"?) when I machine washed a strip in a delicates bag on cold. Which is good enough that I threw the next chunk in the machine similarly as pre-treatment before I cut and sew.

Learned how to sew a buttonhole on a sewing machine today! Reading the manual helped a lot. I made 5 test ones on my scrap fabric and then 8 real ones on my shirt. I am about 14 hours into shirt construction and only the button attachment, hole opening, and pocket attachment are left.

If you're wondering why I've been packing the car for the last two hours: we simply cannot go on a two day camping trip that's 35 minutes away without bringing at least seven musical instruments and four swords
