Day Seven, the last day of our Augustine Camino, saw us visiting All Saints, West Stourmouth, before continuing across the Kent marshes.👣

Apologies for radio silence over the last month ... I've been away on pilgrimage! Some posts of my pilgrimages coming up over the next few weeks.

Day Six on the Augustine Camino continued with a stop at St Andrews Church, Wickhambreaux. Remarkable Art Noveau 'Annunciation Window' by Danish artist, Arild Rosenkrantz (1896), and some heavily restored medieval wall painting.

Third church on Day Six of the Augustine Way: St Vincent's, Littlebourne. Medieval wall painting showing St Christopher in the local littoral landscape. I just love the tiny ships! 1/2

Second church on Day Six: St Mary the Virgin, Fordwich, with its Romanesque tomb reputed to be part of St Augustine's shrine once at St Augustine's Abbey. Pilgrim Shelf was originally a Bread Shelf for the donation of bread to the poor.

Day Six of the Augustine Camino began with a quick visit to St Martin's. The church was founded before St Augustine’s arrival in AD 597 when it was used by Bertha, queen of Æthelberht of Kent, as her private chapel. Oldest surviving English church still in use.

The pilgrims arrive at Canterbury Cathedral where we meet Torin Brown, the Cathedral's Pilgrim Officer, before attending Evensong, and pausing at the place where Thomas Becket's shrine would once have stood in the Trinity Chapel.

Day Five of the Augustine Camino ... and arrival at Canterbury! 👣

The Roper Chapel at St Dunstan's in Canterbury, showing the entrance to the Roper family vault containing Thomas More's head. More's daughter, Margaret, brought it back from London in 1535 and placed it in the vault. There are plans to exhume the relic and place it in a reliquary above ground.

Continuing onto Canterbury on Day Five of the Augustine Camino, we called in at St Dunstan's. In 1174, Henry II stopped here on his way to do penance for Thomas Becket's murder. The church was originally founded in the 10th century and rededicated to Dunstan in 1030.

On the outskirts of Canterbury, at Harbledown, we reached the site of the medieval leper hospital of St Nicholas, and the Black Prince's Well reputed to cure leprosy. Medieval pilgrims stopped here on their way to St Thomas' shrine in Canterbury.

Day Five of the Augustine Camino saw us walking towards the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Boughton, experiencing a woodland mass, and encounters with yet more apples and orchards!

The inner shrine at the Shrine of St Jude. A 15th-century wooden statue of St Jude and a reliquary containing a small bone relic taken from the major relics at St Peter's in Rome.

Day Four of the Augustine Camino finished at the Shrine of St Jude at Faversham. The Carmelite shrine was opened in 1955 by Father Elias Lynch.

And so, to continue ... Day Four of the Augustine Camino began at our hostel in Doddington with an energetic warmup before setting out on our way to Faversham. 🏋️ 👣

And the well established tradition of waiting outside the Cathedral for the 'all clear' after the incense set off the smoke alarm mid service! 🔥

I had missed the last couple of years, so it was lovely attending yesterday's Patronal Eucharist for Oxford's patron saint, St Frideswide, at Christ Church Cathedral! 😇

How about celebrating St Frideswide's special day with a walk along her newly created pilgrim route between Oxford and Reading, a section of the Camino Inglés?! 👣

Happy St Frideswide's Day! 😇 Frideswide is the patron saint of Oxford and her shrine at Christ Church Cathedral is still visited by pilgrims today!

Arriving in Faversham on the Augustine Camino, passing the Maison Dieu ('House of God') pilgrim hostel at Ospringe, on Watling Street on the route to Canterbury. Founded in 1234 by Henry III, serving pilgrims travelling to Canterbury. 👣

Day Four of the Augustine Camino in Kent and the apple harvest is in full swing! 🍎👣

Day Four of the Augustine Camino during which we stopped at the "Beheading of St John the Baptist Church", Doddington, with its unusual dedication, its 13th-century wall paintings, and its double squint. More images of wall painting in the thread ... 1/2

2/2 ... First wall painting shows Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata, c1250, said to be one of the earliest representations of Francis. Second, a king, 'possibly' Henry II.

If you've registered for my pilgrimage course next term, I'm sorry to say that it's been cancelled due to an unforeseen 'force majeure'. HOWEVER: the course will be back (same term and day) in 2028 - so watch this space for news!

Day Three of the Augustine Camino also took us through the first of many Kent apple orchards ... with plenty of unwanted windfalls to sustain us on our journey! 👣🍎

More from Day Two of the Augustine Camino (Aylesford to Doddington). Pilgrim stamps at St Mary's Church, Doddington; walking through the Kent vineyards; and dinner at the Black Horse at Doddington where we stayed the night. 👣

Day Two of the Augustine Camino saw us passing the site of Boxley Abbey, now in private ownership. In the late Middle Ages the Abbey was famous for its miracle-working Rood of Grace. The ruins of a few walls remain. Also a barn, once the hospitium, and now being renovated by its owners (image 4).

Battle Abbey was built on the site of King Harold's death OTD in 1066. Here is Dougal reflecting on "the spot where King Harold died" close to what would have been the abbey church's high altar.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings! ⚔️ Some images from last month's visit to Battle Abbey: the Abbey's gatehouse and a Norman knight looking wistfully across Senlac Hill, the site of the battle on 14 October 1066 (with a lone sheep for company!).

Day One of the Augustine Camino began at Rochester Cathedral & a chance to walk up the medieval Pilgrim Steps that once led to the shrine of St William of Perth. He was a pilgrim en route to the Holy Land when murdered near Rochester, 1201. Canonised 1256. The second image shows his modern shrine.
