Jackson released her final studio album, What the World Needs Now, in 1969. In 1971, she collapsed due to health issues while touring Germany. She died on Jan. 27, 1972, having transformed gospel music into a highly charged political act and her voice into a potent weapon against oppression. /end

From 1965 to 1967, Jackson served as the cultural anchor of the SCLC’s Chicago Freedom Movement, using her local influence to legitimize MLK’s northern housing campaign and galvanize local activists. At MLK’s funeral, she sang his favorite hymn, Thomas Dorsey’s “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” /9

Jackson performed at the 1963 March on Washington, singing the old spiritual “I’ve Been ‘Buked and I’ve Been Scorned” at MLK’s request. Standing near the podium, she said, “Tell them about the dream, Martin,” prompting MLK to abandon his prepared notes and deliver his “I Have a Dream” speech. /8

In 1954, Jackson signed a contract with Columbia Records and began hosting her own CBS radio program. She met MLK in 1956. In 1957, she debuted at the Newport Jazz Festival, bringing gospel music to jazz audiences. She returned the next year. In 1961, she performed at JFK’s inauguration ball. /7

It was a gamble for Apollo Records, but the recording shattered all expectations. It sold 50,000 copies in Chicago alone in four weeks, ultimately eclipsing millions of copies nationwide. On Oct. 1, 1950, Jackson became the first gospel recording artist to headline New York City’s Carnegie Hall. /6

In the mid-1940s, Jackson used profits from her salon to open a flower shop. She was a sought-after soloist for political rallies, traveling revivals and funerals, but she refused to perform secular music. Her artistic breakthrough came in 1948 with the release of “Move On Up a Little Higher.” /5

Jackson made her first primitive gospel recording in 1931, but it failed to yield commercial success. Needing a reliable income, she attended Madam C.J. Walker’s beauty school in Chicago, earned her beautician’s license, and opened her own salon in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood in 1939. /4

In 1927, Jackson boarded the Illinois Central Railroad and moved to Chicago, where she joined the Greater Salem Baptist Church Choir and soon joined the Johnson Gospel Singers. In 1929, she met composer Thomas Dorsey, who became her mentor and touring partner for the next 14 years. /3

Jackson’s vocal talent was evident from a young age. She began singing in the church choir at just 4 years old, and her abilities immediately set her apart. Even as a child, her voice had power, texture and emotional weight. Her booming contralto could fill a sanctuary without a microphone. /2
