A journalist asked me a few months ago about trimmed mean inflation measures. I said I wasn't sure it made sense to always ignore outliers since they potentially contain signal as well as noise, and it's nice to see GS agreeing here.

A sizeable new batch of public comments were released on the proposed changes to the decennial census, and the % opposed dropped by 2 percentage points each day over the past 2 days...

Charts! Inflation picked back up in September, on both a headline and a core basis. Prices are up 3.7 percent over the past year. Core prices have risen at an annual rate of 3.4 percent over the past three months. #NumbersDay

We hope you got some rest over the weekend and Indigenous Peoples' Day. The most recent check-in on comments submitted on the proposed census rules shows: ✔️ 39,130 comments received 📣 88% opposed

More than 33,000 comments submitted. 88% oppose the proposed changes to the decennial census. Have you shared your thoughts with the Census Bureau yet?

We should also note that the extension to 53 days *still* isn't the 60 day minimum (90 day preferred) that we would expect for a rule of this magnitude. But it's an improvement over just 33 days.

Some days it might feel like no one is listening and there's no point in engaging to support public data. Other days, we get a reminder about why the work matters. Great work, team!

Colleagues and I have been writing & would like to share 3 new resources with you: 🟢 What are “residence criteria” and how would they be used to change who “counts?” 🟢 Would eliminating race and ethnicity questions impair the decennial census? 🟢 Military personnel may be counted in the wrong place

We deeply appreciate @copafs.bsky.social's efforts on restoring scientific integrity. We signed the letter. 📝 Have you?
