University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

delighted delighted DELIGHTED to be back reviewing in @strangehorizons.bsky.social with this reading of Christopher Priest's nonfiction.

Dan Hartland@danhartland.bsky.social

Some more fun with nonfiction is happening over at @strangehorizons.bsky.social today - @aranws.bsky.social is tackling The Recollections, a collection of the late Christopher Priest's criticism from @briardenebooks.bsky.social. It's a super piece which figures Priest almost as a poet of polemic.

You have to realise that it's unreasonable and implausible to achieve Net Zero, we should instead consider practical ideas, like dimming the sun?

John Rentoul@rentouljohn.bsky.social

Are there other ways of showing climate leadership? Is geoengineering (“dimming the sun”) feasible? Is a global carbon tax realistic? Can AI solve the problem? Tony Blair tried to start a wider debate last year www.independent.co.uk/voices/tony-...

Same (but three-time alumnus and several-times past employee). So sad for former colleagues and today's students that an institution we're all desperate to be proud of is behaving so abysmally.

Christian Cooijmans@ccooijmans.bsky.social

As a two-time alumnus of Edinburgh Uni, it's hard not to despair at the short-sighted plans by management to decimate degree programmes across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Solidarity to all affected by this act of utter vandalism.

Ghastly. Shame.

EXC: 90 programmes in Edinburgh University's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are to be closed. The casualties, which include 48 language and literature programmes, will be 'taught out', w/ no admissions after 2027. @heraldscotland.bsky.social www.heraldscotland.com/news/2655839...

Polling really is just name recognition eh. Justice for Allosaurus. I think -- and would be genuinely fascinated to know -- that Diplodocus would score significantly higher in the UK, due to the former star exhibit of the London Natural History Museum.

A shocking new poll result: Many Americans somehow don't have a favorite dinosaur. And only 6% give the correct answer (triceratops). Check out YouGov's new polling on Americans and dinosaurs: yougovamerica.substack.com/p/whats-your...

The phrase "stick a fork in me, I'm done" expresses the ethos of sceptical inquiry: the listener is not invited to believe the speaker's central assertion, but to immediately test it for themselves.

I said lately, after seeing True Detective Night Country ep.1, that I must have a low CGI Animal Tolerance (CGIAT). See also The Green Knight: I struggled to look past that odd, glossy fox. Theory: CGIAT is a cilantro-gene where artists don't realise how much it sticks with certain viewers.

David Shiffman, Ph.D. 🦈@whysharksmatter.bsky.social

I really liked Starfleet Academy. Good throughout, sometimes even great. Classic trek themes with some welcome refreshing new stuff. But that humpback whale in episode 2 is the worst CGI I’ve seen in the 21st century and I can’t get it out of my head.

This is by extension a huge credit to House of the Dragon where said beasts had me completely enthralled. I'm sure that show's budget helped but also -- easier to do when there's less fluff involved?

Theory two: the population's CGIAT will generally drop as we all become more slop-savvy in the age of AI image generation, and the likes of Jurassic Park (1993) and the LotR monsters will come to look even better in hindsight.

Belatedly and delightedly caught up on this exceptional discussion of style in science fiction from @strangehorizons.bsky.social / @danhartland.bsky.social . Great stuff. (props for including a transcript; I didn't have to stop walking every five minutes to take note of my new favourite bon mot.)

NEW PODCAST ALERT! This week we have a new episode of Critical Friends for you! This time out Dan Hartland discusses style in SFF with Paul Kincaid and Dawn Macdonald! What do you think about style? Why does SFF have such a fraught relationship with it? Link ⬇️ strangehorizons.com/wordpress/po...

Bennett here says that Waiting for Godot "would carry more credence if one of the characters cut short the runic wisdom and made a bolt for the bushes." Not the best choice of target; this does, explicitly, happen in Waiting for Godot.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

"When I sit down and write something, I feel I’ve got somewhere. I feel better after doing it. Also, Rupert says I’m intolerable if I’m not working so if I wasn’t writing it would drive him insane." - lovely interview with Alan Bennett by @emmavj.bsky.social:

Everything Mervyn touched became weird.

The Ghost Monk@theghostmonk.bsky.social

I know this isn't weird, but this 'Treasure Island' illustration by Mervyn Peake is so brilliant and so evocative of travelling into adventure, I'm going to tag it #WyrdWednesday anyway. #MervynPeake #illustration #artsky

The mad thing here is I used to watch Daryl Murphy play up front for Waterford United in the early 2000s. Man of many talents I guess.

Richard Kadrey@richardkadrey.bsky.social

I think about this Hunter Thompson quote a lot these days, "The world is not mad, as I thought, but sane in the cheapest kind of way." from a letter to Daryl Murphy, 1962
