To help researchers with the new ARC Research Points system I made a simple spreadsheet calculator for 'what-if' scenarios - looking at various roles, across schemes, across NCGP period (2027 - 2029). Let me know if you use, and it's useful! www.linkedin.com/pulse/arc-re... @arc-tracker.bsky.social

Yesterday the Australian Research Council failed to meet its own deadline for releasing Industrial Transformation grants (~$65m). Apps closed nearly a year ago! But they also didn't bother letting anyone know. For a national research funder, they sure don't seem to care much about researchers.

#ARCschedule Oct26 Outcomes expected for Industrial Transformation schemes … in fact today is last day of ARC’s announcement window. The new security checking processes are really not under control, are they? Truly embarrassing😒 No other events this month. Data ▶️ docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Palli has indeed been saying this for years 🤣😇 It would be a simple matter for the ARC to analyse the data they have, or release it (anonymised) for others to analyse, to support (or not) the decision to have a partial lottery. Many have pointed this out to them, for years, but they have't done it.

Palli Thordarson@palliunsw.bsky.social

I have been saying for years that a pseudo-lottery would be a much better system than the current one we had with the ARC. Really glad to see this is now becoming a reality. #ozchem

ARC has given some details of how new Explore scheme will run ▶️ www.arc.gov.au/news-and-pub... ❗️There's a lottery❗️ Peer review yields 3 categories: highly competitive, competitive, uncompetitive. After funding highly competitive apps, competitive ones enter a lottery for remaining $.

Researchers at all career stages can apply. Project funds can be up to $400k per year for 3 years. ECRs can include their salary in the request. It’s welcome that this scheme is a 3-year scheme, not a 2-year one as many worried would happen, given the early consultations on the new schemes.

I'm sure there's a metaphor here somewhere, but I can't quite place it…

ARC: "Further details on how the assessment process works can be found here." Me: clicks on "here" ARC: haha no @arc-gov-au.bsky.social

To the many unsuccessful Future Fellowship applicants who got great scores (& feedback) from their peer ("Detailed") reviewers, but much poorer scores from their ARC College ("General") assessors, here's an old thread explaining why this happens👇 And, by the way, I'm sorry – the system ain't great.

ARC Tracker@arc-tracker.bsky.social

“Why did the College kill my grant?” Yesterday was the first time most of us have received assessor scores with our #DiscoveryProjects rejections. Many are puzzled: All As/Bs from Detailed (peer, expert) Assessors but Cs/Ds/Es from General Assessors (College members). 🧵👇

When questioned by @jsresearchpro.bsky.social for Research Pro News, ARC said info they inadvertently published about Future Fellowships (FT26) & DECRAs (DE27) 2 weeks ago was "inaccurate". How? They do not say. FT26 outcomes tmrw 👀 And, … err, why is ARC publishing "inaccurate" info? Seems … bad?

Australian news: national research council says apparent data leak "not accurate" (free to read): www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-aust...

ARC says they'll announce outcomes of Future Fellowships (FT26) tomorrow (Tue 8 Sep). In recent times, these announcements have been around 11am Canberra time, though certainly with some variation. My bot will automatically post within a minute after the announcement.

Tomorrow (Tuesday 8 Sept), we will announce the outcome of the ARC Future Fellowships (FT26). Stay tuned for the update!

As someone who missed out on a DECRA for the two previous years when they had abysmal success rates, it's tough to see the ARC change it up like this when I'm no longer eligible

"This content isn't available" ARC has blocked the information about the success rates of Future Fellowships and DECRAs that still under consideration. Clearly, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

ARC Tracker@arc-tracker.bsky.social

ARC has published (inadvertently?) how many Future Fellowships & DECRAs they’ll fund (FT26 & DE27). Even though outcomes aren't out yet, these numbers & success rates are here ▶️ www.arc.gov.au/ncgp-trends-... 299 FT26s & 455 DE27s "funded". Success rate of 20% for both schemes.

Normally only 100 FTs & 200 DEs are funded, but ARC said they'd remove those caps this time, presumably because they initially planned that these would be the final rounds of each scheme. This meant a huge number of applications were submitted; ARC have compensated for this by funding more.

Regarding Future Fellowships – another unusual change to the ARC webpages 👇 The link doesn't lead anywhere, currently, but the fact they've updated that page may – *may* – indicate an imminent announcement. Hard to tell though, as it doesn't normally happen this way.

This post is unavailable.

ARC have postponed #FutureFellowships FT26 outcome announcements; currently can't even say when they'll be. It only last year they were bragging publicly – even to the Senate – that they were "meeting & beating" announcement windows … that they set themselves. Now they can't even do that.

David Hutchinson @dkhutch.bsky.social

Can anybody spot the subtle change in FT26 announcement date @arc-tracker.bsky.social ?

Some substantial changes announced by ARC for next (supposedly final) rounds of some schemes, esp. Discovery Projects👇 🔹CIs can only be on one DP28 app 🔹CIs on successful DP26 or DP27 apps cannot apply 🔹Rejoinder process “has been removed and replaced with more detailed feedback to applicants” ⁉️

RMS appears to be down. It’s been like that from before 8am (Canberra time). I don’t think this was scheduled. Those waiting for FT26 outcomes: Years ago RMS would go down when ARC outcomes announcements were imminent, but that I wouldn’t be reading much into today’s outage.

ARC started their webinars about changes to their grants schemes today. Clarification on some points below, in no particular order, as people report them: 🔹DP28 apps due “early” 2027 (reminder: no EOI) 🔹No new rounds of existing schemes to be announced; FT27 & DP28 unequivocally called “final”.

🔹No changes to definition of Early Career Researcher 🔹ARC made no clear statement about what “high risk” means for Explore (cf. Breakthrough), or how that’s assessed beyond instructions to peer reviewers 🔹Guidelines for new schemes will be provided about 3 months before they open
