In the face of the oncoming Russian horses, the Highlanders' commander, Sir Colin Campbell, told his troops: ‘There is no retreat from here, men. You must die where you stand.’ They fired two disciplined volleys at the advancing enemy, which turned the Russians back. (3/4)

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlander Museum proudly support the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Battalion Army Cadet Force. From hosting them for their Military Knowledge syllabus, tours and object handling workshops, we will continue to assist them when needed.

Our first Winter Lecture of the 2026-2027 series has just been confirmed and will take place in the Colours Room of the museum on Saturday 7th November 2026 at 10.30am. Please note, there is no October lecture. The Argylls in Borneo – 60 Years On

2026 marks 60 years since The Argylls’ involvement in the Borneo Confrontation. Between 1964 and 1966, the 1st Battalion undertook three tours in Sarawak, conducting jungle operations against Indonesian incursions from Kalimantan.

BBC Radio 2 in the Park starts today! If you are visiting Stirling Castle on the 11th, 12th or the 13th of September, please consider leaving extra time to get here. There are a number of road closures in the immediate area around the castle and the Castleview Park and Ride will not be operating.

Pieces of uniform given to soldiers during their service often belonged to the regiment. When a soldier left the regiment for whatever reason, this would be reused, cleaned, mended and reissued multiple times. Several soldiers' stories can be intertwined in one object - such as this kilt.

Another busy weekend for the team, on Saturday we were in the traders tent at the Stirling Highland Games, and it was one of the busiest games we've attended! Our workforce shared stories, tradition and the culture of the regiment, and the impact this has had on Stirling.

Next Wednesday (26th July) we will be holding our next session of summer crafts! Join the team to make some crafts based on things you can find in the museum. This is aimed at little ones and the adults they bring along with them.

Due to a sudden road closure, the car park at Stirling Castle is only open to coaches and accessibility vehicles. All other vehicles are being asked to use the park and ride at Castleview or find alternative parking in the city.

Whilst the park and ride is free to park at, the bus cost is £1 per adult return and 50p for a child’s return. We are genuinely sorry for the impact this has caused, and we have been in contact or are in the process of getting in touch with people who have events taking place in the museum.

In the spirit of learning and never forgetting, join us for our first War Flowers craft session on Saturday 18th July . This is a joint project with Liz Gillespie, who has just launched her book of poetry - Battlefields.

There are a number of flowers associated with remembrance and after World War One, different countries picked different flower to represent their remembrance. Notably – the Poppy, the Forget-me- Not, the Cornflower and the Daisy. There are many others.

The team at The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum are pleased to announce that as of last week, they have been awarded 5 stars as part of the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions (ASVA) quality assurance scheme. This ASVA scheme replaces that of Visit Scotland.

The volunteers and student placements at the museum make the work and projects we do possible. In January, we welcomed Eve to the museum from the University of Glasgow.
