Repost=fijn

OpenAI lanceert vandaag Images 2.

Dus: AGI is achieved.

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

A pretty bold comment in Nature written by linguists, computer scientists and philosophers declaring that AGI has been achieved. "By reasonable standards, including Turing’s own, we have artificial systems that are generally intelligent. The long-standing problem of creating AGI has been solved."

Just wrapped up my presentation at #CHR2025! Did Dutch attitudes towards animals indeed change during the Early Modern period? I analyzed 1.15M chunks of Dutch literature (1600-1800) using LLMs. The data tells a different story than expected. 🧵👇 #CHR2025

Is traditional scholarship wrong on the ethical revival towards animals in the Early Modern period? That's too early to say. What's important here is that this LLM-based method enabled me to use a framework from another discipline, and to replicate some conventional ideas from Human Animal Studies

While at the same time contradicting another idea, and suggesting two others. It is an example of how using computational humanities can fruitfully interact with more conventional scholarship, and thereby raise new questions.

Based on scholarship by Keith Thomas and Karel Davids and in terms of Stephen Kellert's fundamental typology of human attitudes towards animals, I hypothesized: Moralistic (=ethical concern) ⬆️ Exploitation (=material use) ⬆️ Reason (=scientific interest) ⬆️ But...

while a LLM-based statistical analysis of texts from the Digital Library of Dutch Literature (DBNL) finds: Exploitation ⬆️ Reason ⬆️ I see no significant change in Moralistic. And there's a decline in Symbolic and Spiritual

Gemini 3.0 pro is a big step for the (admittedly, niche) task of writing Early Modern Dutch poetry with AI. It's not perfect yet but it rhymes, has a metre (I think; not my strong suit), and has a plausible topic. Still has a few weird things though

ChatGPT is great for recipes And not only because you can give it the quantities you have to work with but because it doesn't preface its response with: "as a child growing up in the Tuscan hills, my nonna..."
