Given that some people applied early, we'll probably hear a first round of interview early November. So apply now if you were thinking of applying ☺️ [and deadline was moved to November 15 to ensure accomodation is easier to find for the first day on the job]

We're hiring across many roles at Trillium Labs to build the open scientific ecosystem for LLMs. Most important hires right now (ideally with start dates soon): * Full time post-training researchers * Engineers with experience with popular open-source libraries...

lol, status "Mr. Smith currently shares Bill, the general unnamed-man voice, as he did in chapter 2. In this chapter Bill also voices the cinema manager, the men in the street, the professor and the jewel thief. So Mr. Smith and the thief both sound like Bill and talk to each other in the bookshop."

Claude on how Jev is doing for my audiobook: "... but the castle scene is still problematic since the black, green and red knights aren't part of the cast, causing their lines to scatter incorrectly to the creature voice and Sir Launcelot even though he's locked in the dungeon at that point." 🤷‍♀️

i’ve been loving annotate.js i have agents generate html, which is a great way to get visual explanations, and then have them slip in a CDN reference to annotate.js this answers the problem with HTML: people can add comments and export it and send you a json file reviewjs.github.io/annotate/

reviewjs.github.ioAnnotate.js — turn any website into a review boardA drop-in visual review layer for any website. Highlight, draw, pin and comment right on the live page. Open source, local-first, one script tag. Optional feedback endpoint.

Friday exercise: using Jev to help split up narration vs dialog and then TTS to build an audiobook, comparing new Gemini tts with Elevenlabs v4. 1/2

Price-wise, Elevenlabs would be 3x the cost of the more robotic Gemini one, and for a book, absolutely at least the cost of buying an audiobook! Except, multiple voices and sfx. Interesting economics. Works out only if you can't find the audiobook?

Jev is remarkably good at the speaker identification judgment, a known hard problem. Useful to find where it gets confused. Elevenlabs sounds amazing, as expected. Gemini blocks on supposed child harm (this is a children's book I'm doing) which is stupidly annoying. 2/3

When you feel guilty for confessing to Claude, "I think we need to localize this, can you outline a plan, sorry I know I should have said in advance."

Solid day of updating a backlog of french flash cards in firebase and getting them to display on a new TRMNL eink display, with significant Claude-ish help.

In our work on extracting memorized pieces of books from open-weight LLMs, we measure how likely models are to output training text verbatim. But near-verbatim cases matter too. E.g., high-probability continuations for this Gatsby quote differ from the original only by punctuation:

Quantum snails in a game bug: "Why they flipped: a snail's body was drawn pointing exactly where it had just decided to go, so any sudden change of mind showed as an instant flip." (All games have weird bugs.)

I asked Claude for an explainer on the paper that inspired Emily St John Mandel for Exit Party and it was quietly scathing. (It would be crazy not to have the best LLMs critique your research these days.)

Also a game designer role:

google.comGame Designer, Games, DeepMindDeepMind has long-established connections with gaming, whether through early AI-breakthroughs mastering Atari games or Starcraft, and more recent research with Genie and SIMA agents. We are looking for a Game Designer with a deep understanding of core, player psychology, and interactive storytelling to help us architect a new generation of breakthrough experiences. If you are a systems-thinker who views AI not just as technology, but as a brand-new design material, we want you on the team. Inception runs like a startup, balancing high energy idea generation with pragmatic, clear and regularly refined operations. Your mission is to design core loops, mechanics, and gameplay systems that would be fundamentally impossible without AI. You will be the creative glue bridging the gap between machine learning research and player-facing fun. As a Game Designer, you will advocate a show, don't tell culture by translating abstract AI capabilities into tangible game prototypes. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to define player agency, map out system dynamics, and steer creative ideation sessions that push the boundaries of modern game design.
