PAY ATTENTION AMERICA. This is phase 1 of Trump's unravelling of our democracy, starting with sabotaging the election process.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

The Justice Department is demanding all ballots from the 2024 election in the Detroit area, a highly unusual move that comes shortly after prosecutors seized 2020 ballots in Georgia and obtained 2020 election records in Arizona.

The New York Times gets it right, as usual.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

President Trump turned his State of the Union address into full-blown political theater. There wasn’t a lot of policy talk in Tuesday’s speech or much coherence when it came to foreign affairs. It was a night of stunts and special guests.

The Donald Trump formula for appointments: bypass FBI background checks for cabinet appointments + jerry-rig recess appointments to avoid Senate hearings and confirmation = no checks and balances on presidential power

The march toward authoritarianism continues unchecked.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

The FBI searched a Washington Post reporter’s home as part of an investigation into classified material, people familiar with the matter said. It is exceedingly rare for federal agents to search a journalist’s home. trib.al/tKsg85n

If only the United States had the good sense to do this.

The Australian government announced a gun buyback plan on Friday following the deadly mass shooting at Sydney's Bondi Beach last weekend.

Discontinuing the penny makes a lot of cents.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

The American penny died on Wednesday in Philadelphia. It was 232. The cause was irrelevance and expensiveness, the Treasury Department said. Nothing could be bought any more with a penny, as the cost to mint the penny had risen to more than 3 cents. nyti.ms/48bFd5K

We must end Donald Trump's SHUTDOWN by not kicking 25M people off their healthcare, and causing cruel punishment of our most suffering, struggling and marginalized Americans!

Gov. Pritzker will stand up to Trump in a way that few others have done. It needs to happen to stop Trump's assault on American democracy. Go get 'em Pritzker. Millions of Americans are behind you.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Pritzker: "No one in the administration -- the president or anybody under him -- has called anyone in my administration or me. It's clear that in secret they're are planning this invasion with US troops."

In case you weren't disgusted enough with the heartlessness of the #Trump administration...

The Last Mile with USAID@thelastmilewithusaid.substack.com

A mother in Liberia is walking miles for medicine that no longer comes. Her child is starving. The clinic is closed. This is what policy looks like when it forgets who bleeds. Read this. Sit with it. Then ask who we become when we cut aid and call it strength.

Thank you Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Your anti-vax insanity has caused this historic surge of measles cases. Your father and uncles would be ashamed.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

The United States has recorded its highest annual measles cases in 33 years. The milestone marks a public health reversal in defeating a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease as the anti-vaccine movement gains strength.

Breaking news: The Supreme Court deadlocked over the constitutionality of the nation’s first public religious charter school, blocking the creation of the controversial Catholic online academy in Oklahoma.

Yup.

I’ll say it again. What makes this platform different is that it’s moderated. And, The Terms of Service are enforced. Bluesky is not like Twitter The world needs a platform where people who disagree can have a real discussion.

I can only imagine how furious #Trump will be when this issue comes out. (This is the real cover of the next Time Magazine, not a gimmick.)

Abolishing the Department of Education will further decimate rural schools... And, for what? The Dept of Ed does not write curriculum -- that is done at the local and state level. The funding from the department mostly supports economically disadvantaged school systems. The poorest schools...

I am really frustrated that the press is discussing the destruction of USAID as something that has happened rather than an illegal action that will likely be undone in two weeks when courts tell the world that it was illegal.

I see more criticism here of Democrats in Congress than I do condemnation of Republicans. And yet it is the GOP who are enabling Trump. It tells me a lot when I see you regularly bash our side but say nothing, ever, about the other. Reflect on your choices. You may be helping the fascists.

The world’s richest man — who was not born in America — has seized complete & total control of the presidency — and all your money: credit, stocks, bonds, cash — all of it. And he doesn’t pay for eggs nor gas. Thanks, maga.

SHARE WIDELY. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one. (1/3)
