The results showed clear differences between the three configurations: 🟡 The L-shaped desktop was associated with the lowest sustained attention load, which the authors attribute to its semi-enclosed design and reduced visual interference.

🔵 The linear configuration ranked second, with its vertical separation helping to structure the workspace. 🟡 Despite providing the most space, the U-shaped configuration contained more redundant visual information and was the least conducive to maintaining prolonged focus.

The researchers compared three desktop layouts (L-shaped, linear, and U-shaped) in 33 children while they performed Go/No-Go tasks. At the same time, changes in oxygenated hemoglobin in the prefrontal cortex were measured to assess cortical activation.

🟡 The authors found the wearable NIRS-EEG headgear offered a good compromise between data quality, infant comfort and experimental success, while opening possibilities for measurements outside the lab, such as home visits.

Studying the infant brain during sleep 🧠💤 In their study, Gossé et al. developed and tested customized fNIRS-EEG headgear specifically for sleep research in infants aged 5 to 9 months.

Across two study phases, the researchers moved from a non-wearable NIRS setup to a fully wearable system. For the wearable setup, two BabyBrite systems were combined with EEG to simultaneously record hemodynamic and electrophysiological signals during natural infant sleep.

The results highlight the importance of comfort and wearability when working with little participants: 🟡 With the wearable setup, 90% of the infants slept, compared to approximately 40% using the non-wearable setup.

One device, two perspectives: measuring brain and muscle oxygenation simultaneously 🧠💪 Understanding what happens in the brain and muscles at the same time can provide valuable insights into the body’s response during physical activity.

With the PortaLite MKII, researchers can measure cerebral and muscle oxygenation simultaneously using two sensors connected to a single control unit. 🟡 Measure two locations at the same time, such as brain and muscle, both brain hemispheres, or different muscle groups.

🔵 Capture relative changes in oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin, as well as absolute Tissue Saturation Index (TSI). 🟡 Take measurements beyond the traditional lab setting thanks to its lightweight, portable design and online and offline measurement possibilities.

🟡 Explore important considerations when interpreting NIRS data, including measurement depth, adipose tissue and physiological calibration 🔵 Discover why individual athlete data can be especially valuable when translating NIRS measurements into practice

Drawing on his work with athletes across speed skating, swimming, biathlon, rugby and field hockey, Prof. Cooper shows how portable NIRS can move measurements beyond the lab and provide insights into muscle oxygenation during real exercise.

🟡 Short Separation Channel regression: using superficial signals to regress extracerebral contributions, including motion artefacts, from normal channels. There is no single solution for every dataset.

The appropriate approach depends on the nature and extent of the artefacts, your research question, and the amount of data available. Combining different approaches can also help improve data quality.

🔵 Spline interpolation: correcting short artefactual segments while leaving the remaining data intact. 🟡 Principal Component Analysis (PCA): identifying and removing components associated with artefactual patterns.

In the third part of our blog series on motion artefacts, we look at different strategies for addressing them while preserving reliable fNIRS data: 🟡 Trial rejection: removing trials or time windows affected by artefacts.

What happens to muscle oxygenation as exercise intensity increases? Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows researchers to monitor local changes in muscle oxygenation during exercise, providing insight into the balance between oxygen supply and demand.

The video also looks at the value of measuring locally across multiple muscle regions, where oxygen consumption can differ even within the same muscle. Curious about muscle NIRS and its applications in sports and exercise research? 🔗 Watch the full introduction:
