I’ve only cried [distress] three times due to academia. Twice as a graduate student, because of other people. But for the first time, last night, I cried as an assistant professor, because of myself. 😎

I was totally baffled by this—I thought maybe I missed something. Because why would she go to police if she said it was all consensual? It turns out the DA was playing language games: Doe described what happened to her, and *prosecutors* made a legal determination that what happened wasn’t a crime.

9/11 was an unspeakable tragedy. Many lives were lost on that day. Later, many first responders and survivors lost their lives from cancer, destitute. And many, many more innocent Afghans and Iraqis lost their lives in the aftermath. We should not selectively remember all the innocent lives lost.

New paper published in @journalrep.bsky.social by myself and @mhayes.bsky.social! In this paper we investigate whether MCs are responsive to their African American constituents by leveraging redistricting-induced changes in MCs' constituencies. 1/x

My uncle (an MD) sat through an entire evening of me explaining the phd process and academia. He was appalled and just kept saying, “why would anyone do this to themselves?” I did feel a little validated 😹

I’m proud of @solisrodolfo.bsky.social for sticking to his guns about doing qualitative work. He convinced me, my lab supported his training, and now he’s producing cool conceptual/theoretical work others will find valuable 😎 He’ll be on the job market in the fall.

I was trying to use ChatGPT to help me format a bibtex (I do not use latex), and I was so annoying with its flattery that I asked it to stop and just give me a response. It literally couldn’t stop.

My grandma was in my dream last night. She was with me and my mom and dad. She kept putting slices of pizza on my dad’s plate so he’d have enough to eat. If I stop to think more about my family, I will lose it.

“Entire country can be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow night” 93 million people live in Iran. That’s larger than CA, TX, and FL combined. It’s also where my mom is from. Where a majority of my family live. My grandma. My aunt (my kindred spirit). My uncle. My cousins. 🥺

ICYMI my solo article on MENA identity. When MENA Americans aren’t given a “MENA” option on forms, they answer identity-related questions on politics more strongly (eg higher end of the scale) than if“MENA” had been added. Having the group label or not changes the average response!

One of the hardest nowruz’s but we are still here and celebrating. That’s our resilience.

Nowruz celebrates the arrival of spring and rebirth. But for many in the Iranian diaspora, this year is different. As the war continues, many are trying to balance the joy of the holiday with grief. n.pr/4t0tiiV

Sometimes it is kind of a shame we only work with students only one semester. I have had the absolute privilege of working with a handful of students for the entire year, and it's been so crazy cool to see their thinking take shape over that time.

My grandma’s apartment building has burned down. Fortunately she’s safe, and we can help her. But so many people in Iran are so poor and don’t have anyone. This regime propagated their misery for years. They funded terrorism globally while Iranian people go hungry.

My yoga instructor is Iranian. She has always a bit cool toward me since I started attending her classes. Like doesn't say hello, no smiles. Totally fine! She's a serious person! Yesterday, when we saw each other, we ran toward each other and hugged. This is what it means to us.

Once again. If you said NOTHING while the regime murdered 30,000 of its own people in less than one months time, maybe you should do the same today. You don’t actually care about Iranian lives.

Amanda Sahar d’Urso@asdurso.bsky.social

How about this: if you didn’t post anything when the Iranian regime killed tens of thousands of Iranians protesting for freedom in the streets, maybe you should refrain on commenting on Iran today esp if your comment is “concern for Iranians.” Honestly, it makes you look cynical and heartless.

Iranians were rising up and the regime killed thousands upon thousands of people. Regular people don’t have the arms to revolt against a regime like Iran. Not saying the US doesn’t have its own agenda, but the Iranian people have shown they don’t want the regime. Shouldnt we listen to them?

I know it’s idealistic, but I really hope the series finale of Tehran (whenever it is) will have Tamar choosing to live happily in a free Iran. Each season she’s connecting more with being Iranian, and it’s nice to see. 🥺
