Hey it’s Wednesday! That means the next issue of #TheAccessibilityPond is going out when? Tomorrow! If you’d like to sign up or check out the latest issue, you can do it here: buttondown.com/the-accessib.... Last week, I outlined my 90-day plan for the pond and my first 6 months in AGWG.

This is EXCELLENT reporting

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

Indianapolis feels kinda inaccurate tbh 😭

Sacramento is, by these metrics, the best value and some of the highest quality of life anywhere in the west. California incomes and sunshine with Portland’s prices and Denver’s access to nature is I guess a ranking-friendly combo?

Dang! Wrote the next issue of #TheAccessibilityPond. I’m sending it out either tomorrow or Thursday! Where to sign up if you want it in your inbox: buttondown.com/the-accessib...

I think I'd completely forgotten how to blog for a couple years there but the feeling might finally be coming back to me?? I hope, because if so that's a lovely sign from the executive function part of my brain!

Before we totally abolish DHS, let’s outline accessibility impacts that’d have if not mitigated: The DHS Trusted Tester Process is one approach to testing accessibility to Section 508 (legally required in US edu and gov). DHS offers training & certification for identifying trusted testers.

Truthout@truthout.org

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

Text literacy isn’t a sign of intelligence. It’s a sign of fluency in a written language. You can be very intelligent and lower fluency in a written language. Fluency is a skill & there are many ways to grow it. 1/2

Like many skills, not everyone can achieve them the same. There are all kinds of barriers that can appear in skill development—accessibility, financial, educational. Example: Reading is taught by sound in mainstream education settings. If you can’t hear? Fluency is harder to build. 2/2

Is there a database of book cover descriptions somewhere? Sometimes book covers are too niche for me to describe on my own. (For alt text accessibility.)

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

Miss her terribly 💔

Ashlee 🤟🏻@ashleemboyer.com

She is my first and last thoughts every single day. Every single day, such heavy thoughts. I love to picture her smile and laugh, even though those images quickly remind me of the cold permanence of her absence.

Think I’ll have to make photo essays be part of my first book. This strip of Franklin Road has so many memories. Like this specific DQ where I got countless medium vanilla cones dipped in chocolate. Across the street I got foil-wrapped Hershey bars and Extra gum. And tiger tails at Village Pantry.

Ashlee 🤟🏻@ashleemboyer.com

Some days you just gotta drive through your childhood streets, taking pictures of the places you grew up, pick up a few of Audre Lorde’s books at the library, have dessert before dinner, and treat yourself to Yats drunken chicken. First really great day I’ve had in many months. 🩷

I have so much I want to write about my Grandma that doesn't feel within reach because her estate isn't closed. Please send all the good vibes, prayers, whatever you believe in... because I need this chapter to end so I can move to the next chapter of my healing.

The final days my Grandma was in the cardiac ICU, I was so grateful the nurses didn't seem to care a bit about visiting hours. They saw me in pain and let me sleep in her room. On her last night, I'd driven back after being at the hospital most of the day. One nurse said I must've felt pulled back.

In the first year of my big grief, markings of time passed were painful because they marked “firsts.” First fall. First Thanksgiving. First birthday. First Christmas. In the second year of my big grief, it all still hurts, but I also find myself hurting for the people going through their first.

Trump endorses the mass murder of nearly 14 million people as a "small price to pay" for the US to fight Israel's war in Iran. His MAGA cult cheers in the background at the idea of Iran mass murdering millions of US citizens.

NEW: Trump Mobile appears to have been hacked, resulting in the leak of personal data on 3,615 customers. A person in the data confirmed to me that he spent $100 on a Trump phone last year but never received a device. san.com/cc/trump-mob...

What he had to say about the 1933 Rothschilds FDA going after radium water instead of “vaxxines, dirty electricity, or pesticides”: “Gee I wonder why… healthy people don’t yield large profits” More people need to learn about the eugenics era. They wanted people healthy enough to work jobs.

Sometimes I'm like, "so what you're really saying is..." Then I need to remind myself this man is probably a speck of dust at this point

It’s almost midnight on a Thursday and I’m happily sipping on red wine while reading and taking notes on Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning. Little Ashlee would love knowing what a nerd we become.

I wonder just how significantly anti-friction perspectives in (agile) software engineering have influenced the negative connotations of friction in (web) accessibility.

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

Robert Harrington On Thursday, with hatred twisting his snarling face, Trump lunged at a woman reporter. For a moment, it looked like he was going to physically assault her. “Not you. Not you,” Trump said. Then came the lunge and the monstrous face, “Hey, not you!”

Mitch McConnell disappeared for three months & kept his full salary. Disabled people are forced to prove they’re “still disabled” just to remain in legislated poverty. Folks on SNAP must re-apply and prove they’re “still poor”. Republican Senators don’t even have to prove they’re alive.
