📉 The number of illicit cigarettes consumed each year has fallen by almost 90% since 2000, but, as our report explains, higher tobacco industry funded estimates are used to lobby against tobacco control measures. Read the report here -

📰You may have seen headlines that highlight new ONS data suggesting that 1 million people who have never smoked now vape. It's an alarming stat, but does it really show what it appears to? The short answer is that this isn't what the survey found, & in this blog ASH CE Hazel Cheeseman explains why🤔

What can online harms regulation learn from tobacco control? 🚭 📱 In our new blog, Mark Rowland, former CE of the Mental Health Foundation & outgoing Chair of the Mental Health and Smoking Partnership, explores how lessons from tobacco control could shape the regulation of social media companies.

The BMJ has published a comprehensive new report setting out how the Government consultation on the packaging, appearance and display of tobacco and vaping products was subject to a significant amount of industry lobbying.

The latest figures from the ONS show that for the first time ever, smoking prevalence in the UK has fallen below 10%. 🎉 The data shows that 4.9 million people in the UK currently smoke (9.8% of the population) following a long-term downward trend in smoking prevalence. 🚭

The proposals are essential to protect children from the marketing of tobacco and nicotine products. The letter urges the Government to reject the lobbying of tobacco and vape manufacturers to weaken these proposals, and to proceed with the measures in full.  Read more here:

The Conservative party recently announced proposals to change the benefit system so that recipients could not use their welfare payments to buy tobacco. Our new blog explains why the best solution is targeted quit support & access to free alternatives for those on low incomes and benefits. 👇

As the UK marks 100 days until the Smokefree Generation law, new data from @ashorguk.bsky.social shows that 6 in 10 young people who have ever smoked regret it. Smoking remains a leading preventable cause of heart attacks and strokes, causing tens of thousands of deaths each year in the UK.

Today is 100 days until the smoke-free generation comes into force on 1st January 2027, and new data from ASH shows that 62% of 11–17-year-olds who have ever smoked say that, if they could go back in time, they would not start smoking. 📆🚭

ASH CE Hazel Cheeseman has written to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) regarding advertising by British American Tobacco (BAT). The advertisement relates to the Government's current consultation on the packaging of nicotine pouches, and reproduces a quotation attributed to ASH.

The advertisement mischaracterises the Government's proposals and uses ASH's words selectively and in a context in which we believe misrepresents our position. Taken together, we believe these elements create a materially misleading impression both about the Government's policy and our position.

Whilst vapes are an effective smoking cessation tool for adult smokers, they should not be used by children or young people. Yet, they are being displayed in plain view of children, with bright and colourful packaging.

Last week the APPG on Smoking & Health and the APPG on Poverty & Inequality hosted a roundtable on smoking and poverty in Parliament. Attendees heard from Gillian & Hannah, experts by lived experience, about the toll that smoking placed on their finances, relationships & health.

We were pleased to host an event yesterday bringing together 150 colleagues from across the South of England, focusing on how we can work together to implement the upcoming smokefree generation policy, and maximise the opportunity that this presents for public health. Thank you to all our speakers.

We know smoking causes poverty. So why isn’t it treated like a cost-of-living issue?🚬 In this blog, ASH Senior Policy Officer, Noah Traill explains how smoking contributes to financial hardship & how a smokefree roadmap could eliminate this preventable contributor to the cost-of-living crisis.

Writing in The Grocer, ASH Deputy CE @carolinecerny.bsky.social explains the upcoming regulations on tobacco and nicotine products as part of the Tobacco and Vapes Act. Caroline highlights the vital role that retailers will play in ensuring this next chapter of the smokefree journey is a success🚭

thegrocer.co.ukRetailers are central to the next chapter of the smoke-free journeyNew regulations are imminent - but much of what retailers will be asked to do will already feel very familiar, says Caroline Cerny of Action on Smoking & Health

There's been media attention today about a review by RCPCH highlighting evidence on vaping & the risks it poses to young people. On BBC Breakfast, ASH Deputy CE Caroline Cerny said young people shouldn't use vapes. However, it's important that vapes are accessible for adult smokers who want to quit.

The Government has an open consultation which seeks opinions on balancing these two policy objectives. They are proposing to reduce the appeal of vapes to children by restricting their packaging, appearance, and display. You can view the consultation and respond here: www.gov.uk/government/c...

This article from @crukpolicy.bsky.social, in a series on the National Cancer Plan, highlights why reducing obesity rates should be a national priority. Looking to the UK's success in reducing smoking rates as an example, it calls for sustained, evidence-led policy action to reduce obesity.
